The Wedge, Plettenberg Bay – Southern Cape
3 to 7 July, 2006

A major upset occurred in the SABA Wedge Classic when Drop Knee event favourite Wesley Fischer bowed out in the quarterfinals. The 5A rated Plettenberg Bay event carries a R17, 500 prize purse and has been sponsored by First National Bank, Robberg Seafoods, Wavecrest Distributors, Ocean Life, deBIS Fleet Management and Fish Bone Design Studio.

Fischer’s absence has left the door wide open for rising Drop Knee stars like Josh Kleve (CT). Contest organiser and Wedge local Wayne Craig (CT) performed well by successfully juggling his event responsibilities with focusing on his heat and breezed through to the semi-finals.

The surf conditions improved to no end with a bigger swell and favourable winds which resulted in high scores and excellent riding. Marc Jucker (Port Elizabeth) revelled in the larger waves to clinch the best wave of the day scoring a perfect 10.

Top performances in the Master’s quarterfinals were seen from Lee Slabber (CT) and Steve Polinski (CT).

Thursday saw the Boys U12, Girls U16, Ladies, Masters and Development rounds take to the water to whittle the field down further ahead of Friday’s finals.

The SABA Wedge Classic is also supported by Bitou tourism; they will provide activities on the beach to ensure that the whole family is entertained with particular focus on fun events for children.

Product sponsors include Red Bull, Reef Brazil, Arnette Sunglasses and Logic Magazine.

The SABA Wedge Classic is the fourth event on the national circuit which counts towards the crowning of the year end champions in the Pro, Boys, Juniors, Men, Women, Masters, Drop knee, Under 12 boys, Under 16 girls and Development divisions.
