The Wedge, Plettenberg Bay – Southern Cape
3 to 7 July, 2006

The South African Bodyboarding Association (SABA) has announced that a new concept will be test-run at the 2006 SABA Wedge Classic bodyboarding event at the Wedge in Plettenberg Bay from 3 to 7 July.

Riders will be given the opportunity to compete in one more division than their regular division however entrants can only select a category higher than their current one.

The only exception will be the Development division which will only be open to upcoming riders; the development riders won't be permitted to ride in any other division.

The Drop Knee section will become a third optional division, but bodyboarders will only be able to select two prone categories and will be required to pay in full for any additional divisions.

SABA Chairman Alistair Taylor went on to explain the motivation behind the innovative format saying, "For the Wedge contest, no SABA ratings points will be awarded for an extra division, however, if the concept works well, we will implement it in 2007 and full points will be awarded for all divisions that riders choose to compete in."

The new format could shake up the results with riders as young as U12 and women given the chance to challenge their heroes in the premier Pro division.

Deadline for entries is fast approaching and to avoid losing out bodyboarders are encouraged to enter as soon as possible because D-day is June 23. After this date no late entries will be accepted.

The SABA Wedge Classic is also supported by Bitou tourism; they will provide activities on the beach to ensure that the whole family is entertained with particular focus on fun events for children.

"I am getting very excited because everything is coming together and everything points towards this year's SABA Wedge Classic being better than ever before. So come down to Plett and experience what our lifestyle of bodyboarding is about. If you have made other plans then change them because you are going to miss out," said event organiser Wayne Craig from Wave Crest Distributors.

deBIS Fleet Management have also come on board to support the development of bodyboarding, helping to attract and groom future stars who may never have been afforded the opportunity to ride waves before. deBIS Fleet Management will be providing rash vests shirts for the participants to ensure that they have a long term reminder of their fun day spent bodyboarding with the pros. In addition to this deBIS Fleet Management has sponsored a generous amount of cash for the main event.

This year's event has received an even bigger boost from sponsors First National Bank, Robberg Seafoods, Wavecrest Distributors, Ocean Life, deBIS Fleet Management and Fish Bone Design Studio. The prize purse totals an impressive R17, 500 which for the first time ever will be divided amongst the Pro division, Ladies and Drop Knee riders. Product sponsors include Red Bull, Reef Brazil, Arnette Sunglasses and Logic Magazine.

Entry forms are available from www.wave-crest.co.za and at all major surf stores nationwide; interested members of the public can fax 021 914 6666 or email [email protected] alternatively for more information please call Wayne Craig on 083 463 7102 or Steve Polinski on 082 573 3173.
