The Wedge, Plettenberg Bay – Southern Cape
3 to 7 July, 2006

Local Wedge bodyboarder Lyndal Pells (Plettenberg Bay) bruised a few egos in the Pro division on day two of the 5A rated SABA Wedge Classic held in Plettenberg Bay.

Pells won her heat in style to advance to the second round in the male dominated sport. The SABA Wedge Classic boasts a R17, 500 prize purse and runs until July 7.

Surf conditions remained mediocre with small sloppy waves the order of the day; event organisers halted the contest at 2.00pm in the hopes of catching better surf forecast to arrive later in the week.

Local knowledge proved to be a key factor with Sampi Kamffer (Plettenberg Bay) excelling in the Drop Knee heats. Byron Hough (Plettenberg Bay) continued to shine easily advancing through the first Pro round.

Day one’s standouts Terence Pieters (Margate) and Jared Houston (Cape Town) once again showed fine form defeating a string of big names in the Junior heats.

The SABA Wedge Classic is also supported by Bitou tourism; they will provide activities on the beach to ensure that the whole family is entertained with particular focus on fun events for children.

This year’s event has received an even bigger cash boost from sponsors First National Bank, Robberg Seafoods, Wavecrest Distributors, Ocean Life, deBIS Fleet Management and Fish Bone Design Studio. Product sponsors include Red Bull, Reef Brazil, Arnette Sunglasses and Logic Magazine.

The SABA Wedge Classic is the fourth event on the national circuit which counts towards the crowning of the year end champions in the Pro, Boys, Juniors, Men, Women, Masters, Drop knee, Under 12 boys, Under 16 girls and Development divisions.
