The Wedge, Plettenberg Bay – Southern Cape
3 to 7 July, 2006
Terence Pieters (Margate) was the standout on day one of the SABA Wedge Bodyboarding Classic held at the Wedge in Plettenberg Bay. The diminutive south coast star made the most of his opportunity to compete in two divisions and cleaned up in his Junior and Boy’s heats.
The early rounds of the Boys, Junior and Men’s heats took to the water. Strong winds made for chilly water and testing waves but this did not deter 200 of South Africa’s most talented bodyboarders putting on a spectacular show.
"The SABA Wedge Classic was off to a good start today, the surf conditions could have been a bit better but we have had a word with wave forecaster Spike and he is predicting better swell later this week. There is a really great atmosphere down here with all of the riders together in Plett at their favourite event of the year," said event organiser and top competitor Wayne Craig.
Local bodyboarder Byron Hough was responsible for some of the day’s biggest upsets when he eliminated top rated riders and he will be one to watch over the next few days.
Young guns that shone in the junior heats included Pieters and Aden Kleve (WP) who enjoyed being able to shake up the results amongst their older peers.
Tuesday sees the Pro, Drop Knee and Junior rounds take to the water.
The SABA Wedge Classic is also supported by Bitou tourism; they will provide activities on the beach to ensure that the whole family is entertained with particular focus on fun events for children.
This year’s event has received an even bigger boost from sponsors First National Bank, Robberg Seafoods, Wavecrest Distributors, Ocean Life, deBIS Fleet Management and Fish Bone Design Studio. The prize purse totals an impressive R17, 500 which for the first time ever will be divided amongst the Pro division, Ladies and Drop Knee riders. Product sponsors include Red Bull, Reef Brazil, Arnette Sunglasses and Logic Magazine.
The SABA Wedge Classic is the fourth event on the national circuit which counts towards the crowning of the year end champions in the Pro, Boys, Juniors, Men, Women, Masters, Drop knee, Under 12 boys, Under 16 girls and Development divisions.
