Reef/Science Biggest Wave Contest - update.

posted by Gareth White on 10th February 2008

After months of communication between myself and photographer, Shaun Timoney, it gives me great pleasure to finally be able to share these spectacular images of James Moolenschot and Peter Lambert tackling the Sunsets beast.

I was first made aware of these images in October last year, but was unable to get my grubby little paws on them until a few weeks ago, when Shaun contacted me to let me know that he was back from his trip abroad.

Timoney captured these amazing images from the relative safety of his boat, while James slugged it out in the massive surf for a remarkable four hours! Peter and a couple of his buddies joined James for a late session and got there just as the wind died and the surf started to max out.

I am also proud to announce that the generous people from Vivid Zeal productions have kindly donated The Hollow::Cast DVD’s and t-shirts as prizes for the contest. Odd isn’t it that a multi-million rand business can’t afford to honour a verbal contract, but a geezer from die Wes Kus can find it within his capacity to chip in. Thanks a million Neels!

Prize money for the contest will remain the same - R4000 for the rider and R4000 for the photographer. Not to forget the Biggest Wipe Out…he or she still gets a big bag of carrots and as a bonus, if they’re well behaved, will receive their very own copy of The Hollow::Cast!

On the topic of the Biggest Wipe Out – you will notice that I have also uploaded a shot of Chris Dowe getting owned at Sunsets. This is the same shot I uploaded with the sponsor pull-out article and now you can see what I was on about when I said that Dowe went head over heels…legend!

Firstly we would like to thank the riders for risking it all and providing us with the material to run this contest. Secondly I would personally like to thank the sponsors - Reef, Science and Vivid Zeal for their contributions towards the sport of bodyboarding in South Africa.

This is from wavescape in relation to this spots name.

Sunset

Just beyond Dunes, out to sea, lies a bombora. It's a big wave oasis in the middle of the ocean. The swell must be 8' or more before it begins to break. The crew who surf Dungeons will go out here on those fun 20' days. Sunset, similar to its namesake in the Pacific Ocean, is a huge peak that features those jaw-dropping take-offs that seem to go on forever. A giant shoulder follows briefly before this grand daddy is laid to rest in a deep channel. Mostly a take-off. Doesn't offer the giant walls of Mavericks or Dungeons. Surfers are dropped off by rubber duck. Some are towed in on jetskis. ****

We dont call pipeline, pipelines, the Spots name is SUNSET
