Reef/Science Biggest Wave Contest 2007

posted by Gareth White on 27th June 2007

Reef Wetsuits and Science Bodyboards have launched the first ever South African biggest wave contest.

This prestigious award will be won by a South African bodyboarder who – based on review of photo’s or video images by a panel of experts – demonstrates the most advanced and committed level of riding on the biggest paddle-in wave in South Africa.

Substantial prizes are on offer for both the rider and photographer. The winning rider will be awarded the amount of R4000. The winning photographer will also be awarded R4000 cash!

Biggest wipe-out gets a bag of Carrots!

The contest has begun and with such amazing prizes up for grabs, are you brave enough to take the plunge?

Rules for the contest are as follows...

RULES:

1. JUDGING CRITERIA/ELIGIBILITY:

The Science-Reef Wetsuits Biggest Wave Award will be won by a South African bodyboarder who - based on review of photo's or video images by a panel of experts - demonstrates the most advanced and committed level of riding on the Biggest Paddle-In Wave in South Africa.

2. EVENT PERIOD:

The contest begun on the 1st of June 2007, and ends on the 29th of February 2008. All entries must be received by 7th of March 2008.

3. COMPETITORS:

Any South African bodyboarder riding waves on a bodyboard, within the boundaries of South Africa may enter. Tow-in bodyboarding is specifically excluded.

4. LOCATION:

Any wave within the boundaries of The Republic of South Africa may be ridden.

5. VIDEO OR PHOTO ENTRIES:

All video clips or photographic entries must be sent to the following address: - [email protected]

Video footage must be unedited, including all available frames from the beginning to the end of the ride, please email [email protected] with de-interlaced video frame grabs. If your video is in the top 10, then we will request the original captured file. All videos or photos must be without embedded bugs or watermarks.

ALL ENTRIES MUST HAVE THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION:

• Bodyboarders name and ID Number.
• Photographers name and ID Number
• Location and date of ride.
• Video or photo frame of ride.
• Videographer or photographer credit.

NB: - All video clips or photos deemed worthy of consideration may be used by the contest sponsors for any purpose they see fit, by entering you specifically agree to releasing the images.

There is NO LIMIT to how many videos or photos of different rides any particular rider enters into the contest. There is also NO LIMIT to how many riders a photographer or videographer may enter into consideration for the prize. We would suggest only submitting entries of waves over the 9 foot mark though.

6. SAFETY:

The single most important statement to be made in outlining the rules for this competition is that SAFETY MUST BE OF THE UTMOST IMPORTANCE. Any attempts that are extraordinarily dangerous are STRICTLY PROHIBITED! This award is meant to honour and reward those individuals who have for years demonstrated exceptional bodyboarding skills. It is in no way intended to encourage unqualified bodyboarders to take risk for which they are unprepared. Please keep in mind that the ocean claims lives on a daily basis, Mother Nature is not a toy and any attempts to tame her will be futile.

NB: - Reef Wetsuits and Science Bodyboards will not be held responsible for any injuries, loss of or damage to property incurred while attempting to participate in the contest. Entrants do so at their own risk.

We are currently establishing Myspace and Facebook profiles of this event to keep entrants and the general public aware of developments.

More news will follow, keep checking back for updates. Until then, happy hunting.
