WHAT: The 5A rated SABA South African Bodyboarding Championships, is one of the most awaited events on the South African Bodyboarding Association’s (SABA) annual event calendar. An event of this magnitude attracts regional teams from around the country, all competing for top honours and to fight for the chance to be crowned the South African Champion.

Divions cater for Boys (U12 and U15), Girls (U16), Juniors (U18), Pro Men, Women, Men , Masters, Drop Knee and development.

Development clinics will be run during the event to attract the newcomers as well as uncover and develop fresh talent to add to the fast growing sport of competitive bodyboarding.

When: Monday 25 to Sunday 30 September, 2006

Where: Uvongo Beach, Kwa Zulu Natal South Coast

Who: South Africa’s top performing riders representing their respective regional teams. The teams are: Western Province, Boland, Southern KZN, Central KZN, Northern KZN, Eastern Province, Border and Southern Cape.

Last years Pro Division Champion, Daniel Worsley(WP), will be returning from a trip to Australia to compete and defend his title. This will not be an easy task, Phillip Rodriguez (CKZN) , Alistair Taylor (CKZN) and Sacha Specker(WP) are all going to be pushing the limits to try and take the glory of being crowned the 2006 South African Champion.
It will be a family affair for the SKZN Pro Division with the Lee brothers (David & Grant)and Smith twins (Neil & Wayne) fighting for glory on home soil. Derek Footit and David Lee will also be using there local knowledge of the area in the Drop Knee division.

This years ladies division is set to be a real show as the competitors try and gain the championship as last years winner, Karla Costa- Taylor, will not be defending her title. This will leave the championship open to be claimed by any of the favourites including last years runner-up Pamela Bowren (WP), Robyn Sorenson(CKZN) and Lyndal Pells (EP).

The men’s division will see two local South Coast favourites, last year’s men’s Champion Wayne Beekman and runner-up Martin Otto, defending their positions at the top of the division.

In the masters division one of the pioneers of the sport of bodyboarding in South Africa, Mike van Huysteen, will be fighting to claim another South African Championship. This will award him a total of 7 Championships to his name, equalling the record set by fellow CKZN team mate and SABA Chairman Alistair Taylor.

Format: This year for the first time ever, a new format will be used to determine the champions. The respective provincial riders take their scores all the way through to the finals to crown the Provincial Champion, initially it was only the first two heats that counted towards this. This change will ensure that there is consistent bodyboarding throughout the competition.

Status: The 20th annual South African Bodyboarding Championships carries a 5A rating and is sanctioned by the South African Bodyboarding Association (SABA).
