The 20th Annual SA Bodyboarding Champs
5A South African Bodyboarding Championships
South African Bodyboarding Association (SABA) Inter-provincial Event
Uvongo, South Coast KZN- South Africa
25 to 30 September, 2006

The 2006 SABA South African Bodyboarding Championships will see the country's top contenders battle it out for top honours at this years 20th annual 5A rated national tournament to be held at Uvongo on the KZN south coast.

The South African Bodyboarding Championships were first held in Jeffreys Bay in 1987. Team members representing each province are selected from a series of trials held in their region over the course of the year. This is the final event on the 2006 circuit; in addition to crowning new SA Champions, the points count towards the crowning of the 2006 national series SABA champions.

This year for the first time ever, a new format will be used for determining the champions. The respective provinces rider's take their scores all the way through to the finals to crown the Provincial Champion, initially it was only the first two heats that counted towards this. This change will ensure that there is consistent Bodyboarding throughout the competition.

With many of last year’s champions returning to defend their titles against some eager competitors, the event is set to be a real showstopper. Last years Pro Division Champion, Daniel Worsley(WP), will be returning from a trip to Australia to compete and defend his title.

Due to the nature of wind direction affecting the surf conditions, the event will move to attempt to gain the best surf possible for the event. In the case of a South- Westerly wind blowing the event will be held in Uvongo, and if the wind were to change to a North- Easterly the event will move to Lucien Beach 3 kilometers from Uvongo.

The event which is sanctioned by the South African Bodyboarding Association (SABA) carries prizes to the tune of thousands of Rands.

Divions cater for Boys (U12 and U15), Girls (U16), Juniors (U18), Pro Men, Women, Men , Masters, Drop Knee and development.

Development clinics will be run during the event to attract the newcomers as well as uncover and develop fresh talent to add to the fast growing sport of competitive Bodyboarding.

The five day event has attracted over 168 entries is guaranteed to be an exciting affair with individual as well as team titles at stake.

Teams will be made up of each respective provinces best team riders. These provinces include Western Province, Boland, Southern KZN, Central KZN, Northern KZN, Eastern Province, Border and Southern Cape.

The SABA South African Bodyboarding Championships 2006 is hosted by the South Coast KZN Bodyboarding Association and is co-sponsored by SCIENCE, REEF, SPAR, ENVIRON and www.FACTORY7.co.za
