On the first day of the 2007 Debis Fleet Management Sport Unlimited Spur Cape Classic, the judges had the daunting task of getting through 42 heats in a single day to ensure the event finished on time.

Under the careful and well trained eye of Head Judge, Marc "Rossi" Rossouw, the heats were completed. This set a new South African record for the most heats in a single day, the previous record being 37 heats. Rossi will be going as far as to check whether this is world record for a Bodyboarding event.

Four divisions entered the water today, Juniors, DK, Mens and Pro. With the surf not giving the guys too much to work with, riders in all the divisions went out there and gave it their all. Surprising to many was how well the guys performed in such poor conditions.

Wave of the day, as voted by the spectators on the beach, went to Boland Junior rider Paul Morkel (Boland) in a Pro division heat he got the only barrel of the day and ended off with a huge roll off the section, a great accomplishment for a rider that was in a division with a higher level of difficulty than he needs to compete in.

In the Juniors division favourites Jared Houston (WP) and Micheal "Rat" Ostler (CKZN) are both through to the quarter finals winning their respective heats throughout the day and will no doubt be holding nothing back when they meet in the final rounds tomorrow.

The rider of the day went to Derek Footit (SKZN) who rode to victory in his Pro division heats and in the DK heats. Derek pulled out all the stops busting a huge back flip in his Pro division heat, showing that he will be a force to be reckoned with on this years circuit. In the DK heats he "laughed" his way to victory over his competitors, which is what you would expect after his incredible victory at last years SA Championships.

On a lighter note the Debis Fleet Management Development Clinic held went off well, with about 20 underprivileged kids into the water with their bodyboards and a Pro to help them out they were shown the fun side to bodyboarding. A thank you goes to Debis Fleet Management for their support and interest in the development clinics held by SABA.

The 2007 Cape Classic is sponsored by Debis Fleet Management, Sport Unlimited, Spur, Science bodyboards, Reef Wetsuits, Island Style, Bondi Blu, Dakine, Sanuk, Arnette and Aloe Up.

Don't forget that tomorrow will be the last day that Intaba Tickets ill be on sale! Get yours or you cant win!
