The final day of the Hot Buttered Pro-Am. The South Westerly was still blowing, but the swell had dropped a bit. The morning saw registration and the start of the trials for the World Team Challenge. This event will take place in October 2005 at a venue still to be decided.

After the trials, the prizegiving took place at the main stage of the Beach Festival. John Cawood of NKZNBA welcomed all to the prizegiving and thanked the sponsors, competitors, totalisors (Trixy and Sam), judges, Mrs Colleen van Zyl and all those involved in the success of the event. The prizegiving was done by Deon Bosman representing Hot Buttered and his daughter who handed out the prizes.

Another huge round of thanks to the following people involved in the Hot Buttered ProAm: Main sponsors Hot Buttered for their continued support of the event. Sonic Footwear, who came through with great prizes of footwear and t-shirts for the finalists. Cash sponsors, uMhlathuze Tourism Association and Y2K Industrial Cleaning. MacDonalds Richards Bay and Macs Fish and chips for providing food and drink for the contest officials. www.surfalliance.co.za for cash and certificates. Mrs Colleen van Zyl for printing all the forms for the event. Also thanks to the totalisors, Trixy and Sam for their faultless calculating in the Richards Bay heat.

See you again next year!

Info on the World Team Challenge:

The Inaugural World Team Challenge is an initiative of the International Bodyboarding Association to bring all bodyboarding countries and regions together to celebrate the sport.

This first ever event is not intended to be a “professional” event, but rather a showcase of the whole sport on a global scale. Invitations have been extended to 20 countries to participate and the format would be similar to the Football World Cup where participating teams are allocated to pools. There will be a maximum of 2 teams per country and teams would consist of 4 Open Men, 2 Women, 3 Junior Men (21 years and under at 31 December 2005), 1 Drop Knee, Coach and Manager. This brings the total to 12 members/team and translates to at least 250 international competitors attending the event. This excludes friends and family who will travel to South Africa to support their team.

The IBA has invited South Africa to host the Inaugural Event as we have produced some of the Worlds best and most exciting bodyboarders and have some of the best surf in the world; with a national association that is well established and organised and headed by dedicated officials. South Africa has already proved themselves as capable of successfully hosting international sporting events.

The event is planned for August 2005 to accommodate the international bodyboarding circuit and to tie in with our winter swell. The contest will run over a 10 day window period with the competition heats running for 6-7 of those days. In addition a number of satellite events are planned during this time, including development coaching clinics, judging course for adminstrators and other interested parties, an Industry Trade Show and International Bodyboarding conference.

Great news for Bodyboarding in South Africa.

The results of the first trial will be available soon.
