HB Pro-Am: Westerly turns on the Waves for Day 2
posted by John Cawood on 22nd December 2004
Saturday morning saw a moderate South Westerly blowing and good 3ft waves coming through for the competitors. It was decided to complete the event while the offshore was blowing and hold the prizegiving on Sunday after the World Team Challenge Trials.
People flocked to the beach in the great conditions and the Beach Festival was in full swing with Carly from E-TV thrilling the visitors to Richards Bay with talent shows, eating competitions and more.
In the water, the action was intense as the semis and finals took place. Standouts on the final day of competition were: Craig Jenkins from Durban. He made the Pro and Dropknee semi-finals in great style. Wayne du Preez dominated in the Mens division taking out last years winner, Wayne Beekman and 2003 finalist, Andre Marais in his semi-final heat. Ettiene Steyn of Durban won the other Mens Semi. In the Junior Division there were 3 riders who made the final who rode in the Boys Division in SABA for 2003. These were Matthew Botha, Adam Morley and Emile van Vollenhoven. The only junior rider from 2003 in that final was Grant Lee from SKZN.
In the Dropknee Division, Vaughn Harris killed his semi-final heat with Craig Maree coming in second. Losing out on a final place was Ray Keane and Mark McCarthy who both rode well to make semis. In the other semi, the heat belonged to Sacha Specker in 1st place with Craig Jenkins in a close 2nd place. Losing out were Daniel Worsley from WP and seasoned competitor in the DK, Sascha Taljaard.
The Ladies Division final was made up of Debbie Patterson, Shane Kirsten, Robyn Sorenson and Kara Wickens. A tough semi-final draw saw Lize-Mari Ras (U/16 Girls champ 2003) get knocked by Debbie and Robyn in the first semi.
The results for the final day were kept secret until the prizegiving on Day 3.
