30 minutes with 4 of the top guys in the sport was always going to be entertaining. Costes, Tamega, Hardy & Winchester but in the end it proved a two horse race between Costes the Flying Frenchman and Hardy who is on a bit of a comeback trail.
Costes seemed to be out of the water as much as he was in it. A stupidly massive invert on a big backdoor close out earned him his 8.50 and a full rotated air reverse on another backdoor wave completed his back up wave. Throw in another big invert at backdoor and a neat ARS's at Pipe and it seemed he was well on his way to claiming the title, however, with 15 minutes left Hardy gets his first decent score with a rare Pipe tube and roll combo to score a 9.43 and with 6 minutes left he bags a 6.43 to move into the lead which he holds onto till the final horn.
Well done mate!! Costes ended second, Tamega 3rd and Winny 4th.

Specker and Halse got a second chance in the DK event. Halse unfortunately got knocked in round 1 but it was Spex who cruised his heats, winning his Round 1 and Semi finals with some classy riding which we know from the guy.
The finals saw 6 of the world's best DK riders mixing it up - David Hubbard, Matt Lackey, Bud Miyamoto, Spex, Joe Grodzen and Damien Boone.
As expected Dubb was the man to beat at Pipe and bagged two solid rides with some stylish tube riding and manoeuvres but it was the other Hawaiian, Bud, who would steal the show - setting the pace with an opening 8.0 and leading from start to finish. Spex sat in second for the first half of the heat and could have improved on his final result of 3rd if he stuck a few of his moves - a big floater which was nearly made and a big snap in the pocket.

The Semi Finals saw the lulls descend on Pipe and in both semi finals it was the guys who were in sync with the ocean who progressed.
In semi one, McCarthy and Phillips could buy a wave while Dave Winchester and Pierre Louis Costes made the most of the decent ones they did pick up with Winchester in particular going mental to record the events highest scoring heat with a massive invert and ending his heat with a huge reverse air.
Semi two had two Brazilians against two Aussies - including defending champion Paulo Barcellos. Unfortunately it was Paulo and Rawlins who couldn't find any waves. Hardy won the heat on the back of a big invert which he got in the opening minute and backed it up with an average wave. Tamega secured second by making sure he had some back up waves which in the end were good enough to take him though.

McCarthy's Quarter Final was a tough one and had him up against Jeff Hubbard and two of the form men, Michael Novy (Aus) and David Phillips (HAW). McCarthy led the heat from early on and only surrendered it late in the heat to Phillips who boosted a huge invert to take first.

Round 8 saw AT up against McCarthy. AT was riding well but conditions meant it was important to pick the right wave. McCarthy got 2 decent waves in the end to bag second but it was Ardiel Jiminez who picked up a late 8.67 to win the heat.

Heat 2 saw AT charging on with another convincing win to set-up a Round 8 match-up with McCarthy.
Andre Botha featured in heat 3 as the sponsor wild card. In a high scoring heat he ended in 3rd, 0.64 short of second.
Heat 5 saw Spex up against 3 Aussies and unfortunately ended with just one good scoring wave and exited in fourth.
Heat 6 saw both Adam Morley and Darren Halse narrowly miss out on a chance of progressing. Morley ended with just one wave and both needed a low second score - Morley needed just a 1.78.

Round 6 -
Alistair Taylor was up first in heat 2 which he made easy work, looking right at home again in decent sized Pipe.
Spex had everyone on the edge of their seat in heat 6 and pulled it out the bag in a high scoring heat. With no time left in the heat he came up with a 6.27, after needing a 6 point ride and moved through in second.
Jared Houston picked up a monster but wasn't able to do much with it and exited the comp in third place.

Round 5 produced an early casualty in Michael 'Rat' Ostler for the South Africans. Starting with a solid roll off a huge section he seemed pretty secure in a low scoring heat needing only to back up his scoring ride. Even without it he was sitting in the lead until less than a minute remained when David Phillips and Cade Sharp picked up smaller inside ones to move into first and second.
Jared Houston started off completely opposite grabbing a scoring ride in the last few minutes with a 6.5 tube ride at backdoor to move into second. Oshi Grady countered immediately with a Pipe tube and invert and Jerry was back in third. With seconds left on the clock he picked up his final scoring wave with a heavy roll which he hung onto to score a 5.87 and take the heat.
In Round 6 it's AT, Spex and Jerry for the Saffas with Adam Morley and Halse (under the GBR flag) and McCarthy in Round 8.
