Are you ready for Durban?
19th September 2010
"Yes please!" It's time for SA Champs again, and this time CKZN are the hosting province. Out of all the IBA, SABA and Provincial trials SA Champs has got to be one of my favourite events to compete in.
I ask myself why? It's not that we always get good waves for it; it's not that I like seeing CKZN win every year and it's not that Spex might win the double again but rather the congregation of all the top bodyboarders from all the provinces along the coast. Yes even Boland. How lakker is it to have 170 of the top bodyboarders in one town for a week.
SA's is a time to hang out with old friends and make new ones, let's hope the new ones are not met at point road ... Along with friendships come rivalry and this year is set to be one of the toughest yet! All the provinces have been training and the big question is can CKZN hold their own at home? After having a look at some of the teams I have to say WP looks like they are the team to beat with some big stars and new faces in the line-up. SKZN are well overdue a win and they will be feeling at home in Durban. EP has really impressed last year on the West Coat and Boland seems to be getting stronger every year. NKZN is just as amped and if we don't win the "Fishman" trophy (the winning team trophy) I am sure we will win the fight.
Suncoast will be the stage for their first bodyboading event at Suncoast beach and not the famous North Beach for SA's. It's a big change but I trust that CKZN have made the right one by moving it to Suncoast as they are one of the main sponsors. On its day this beach can be fun but it can't really hold big swell and the side wash could kill you! But never fear because if you're not spinning to win in your heat you can spin to win on the roulette tables.
So what should I prepare for when coming to Durban/Durbz/Dirt Bin/eThekwini.
We all know there are only 2 seasons in Durban and that's Summer and Summer. Durbz is home of the beach bum, with the water temperature averaging 23°ree;C you can't really blame them. All you boere better shine up the English skills or you might be feeling far away from home.
When you're not at the beach riding here are few cool activities to keep you busy
• Moses Mabhida Stadium - Sky Car (50 bucks I think)
• Ushaka Marine World (between 80 to 100 bucks)
• Victoria Street Market (4 free)
• Gateway ,Wave House (100 buck)
• Hooters Umhlanga (credit card)
There is only one food type in Durbz and that's hot and spicy so make sure you pack the Vaseline. Don't miss out on getting yourself a bunny chow and rottie too from Johnny's Rotties. They're on Facebook.
SA Champs 2010 is going to be epic!!
See you guys soon.
