Chilean Cake 3 - How bad do you want it?

22nd May 2010

How bad do you want it.

By now you all most likely know that I was elimanted in my round 5 heat against Amaury, Magno and Novy on Thursday [Arica Chilean Challenge], and to tell you the truth I have been putting off writing this blog for a number of days.

I can give you excuses but the real crux of the matter was poor desicion making. My first mistake was choosing to surf the rights. Your basic wave on the left is a barrel (5-8 points) where your basic wave on the right is a shoulder, (3-7 points). Obviously there is a chance you could score massively on the right but you have more chance of scoring high on an average left than on an epic right.

Second mistake which cost me the heat was trying to do an air forward on my 2nd wave. The bowl was very big, had I rolled I might have gotten a 7 or 8 but if I had backflipped and landed I would of been very close to a 10. I feel I was underscored on the spin as it was super critical and vertical, but it was still a bad desicion.

It's amazing how poor preparation and bad planning can lead to a bad result in a sport where everything is so variable but I really learnt that Prep and planning and SWIFT REACTION when things aren't going to plan are imperative to being a good competitor. In our heat Amaury was in 4th with 10 mins to go, he moved closer in to shore and caught his 8 pointer and then hugged the inside on the way back out to get his 2nd wave. I had time to do the same but I tried to stick to my bad plan of looking for the big ramp on the right. No reaction whatsoever.

I'm actually pretty pumped on what I have learnt in this event and next week in Peru I will be prepared and willing to change my plan if things aren't running smoothly.

Here are some pictures from the free surfs leading up too the event, hope you enjoy!

I also want to thank everyone who watched and who left messages, I can't describe the feeling of hearing support 10 thousand miles away when your out in the water! Amazing!

Sick photographs and a typically honest assesment of what went down! Also huge respect that you did not mention or bemoan the fact that you had hurt your back very badly the day before - you`re a good sportsman , son and very proud of you for that! Now get out there, put those lessons you learnt into practice and take the next one!Love from your family!

such an honest write up Jerry, and a great insight into the 'competitor mind'. Stoked you went for big and not 'safe' - we need more of that in competitive BB. Epic charger.
