Contestants warm up for the Cave Rock Challenge

posted by Peter Oberholzer on 19th April 2009

After going up to Cave Rock for the first day of the waiting period it was decided to hold off for better conditions ... even though the conditions were near perfect, the swell was a little less than what the organisers wanted, only 4ft. With the predicted easterly wind about to pick up mid morning, but a good outgoing tide to look forward to, there was not much time to play with and the call would need to be made to get the ball rolling. A vote was taken and the call was made to wait for a better day, a good call as the predicted winds came through at around 9:30 am when all competitors had thought to start the comp at 9:00am if it were to be a go... With Stuart Bradfords knowledge of the Rock he put his views forward to the other competitors, the best call was made on the day as the wind came through even harder than what had been predicted and the waves deteriorated rapidly.

A few days have gone by now with little in the means of waves and competitors are still waiting on any sign of swell and a call from the organisers to hold the Cave Rock Challenge proudly sponsored by Hot Buttered, Custom X and LMNOP. In this down time I managed to catch up with the sponsors...

Q: It's great to see bodyboarders like yourselves giving back to bodyboarders. You guys, The Fressh Toast Corperation, JM Tostee, Charl Tostee and Russell Shaw, have been involved in sponsoring events all over South Africa, you've shown much passion in bringing Bodyboarding to the forfront of the surf industry... To show case the best in bodyboarding at this years Cave Rock, what conditions would like to see the event being run in?
A: Cave Rock when its on is pound for pound probably the best Bodyboarding Wave in KZN. I think I speak for the riders too in saying that all we want is thick thumping landbreeze barrels with some big launch sections, the event after all is about running it in the best possible conditions.

Q: How do you see this years Cave Rock going for the sport now that it's being placed as a specialty on SABA Calender?
A: One thing is for sure, the contest can showcase Bodyboarding in its purest form. I dont believe 2ft contest dribble is good for our sport at all. If the waves turn on this year I reckon the contest will be remembered for a long time!

Q: The best thing about riding waves is getting barreled, Cave Rock offers this up on a regular basis, but just a tube ride in a highly packed field of competitors is not going to cut it...The riders are going to need to combo a tube with some acrobatics... Wez Fisher back from his travels and a successful one at that...A hot favourite for the event and the skills to combo the acrobatics and fluid tube riding! Who would you see as being his biggest threat at Cave Rock?
A: On the day in great waves any competitor has the potential to turn it on, but my gut feel is that if Wez doesn't win it then I'd put my money on Ratt or Charlie Pass!

Q: Any parting words of wisdom for the competitors?
A: Take a couple of deep breaths, those sets can give you a proper flogging!

Thanks to the guys at Fressh Toast Corporation, HB, Custom X and LMNOP, with support like this, bodyboarding is the winner!
