Cave Rock Challenge makes SABA debut

posted on 6th April 2009

Considered by many to be the South African version of Backdoor in Hawaii, Cave Rock has a fearsome reputation and it is with great pleasure that we welcome back a bodyboarding event to a wave of consequence.

The Cave Rock Challenge was forced to skip a year in 2008 due to mother nature's fury as a combination of giant swell and extremely high tides managed to tear away the coastline and road leading to Cave Rock making it inaccessible to cars.

With a 2 week waiting period (14-24 April 2009) in its prime swell and wind window, the event is looking to push the sport in waves of consequence and in a positive move by contest organisers and the South African Bodyboarding Association, the event makes its introduction on the national SABA Circuit. The event has long been considered among peers as one of the most coveted titles to win and it refreshing to finally see it count towards crowning the SABA Champion.

Since Alistair Taylor has relocated to Hawaii he will not be able to defend his title which leaves the door wide open for seasoned veterans like world tour campaigner, Mark McCarthy, stalwart Stuart Bradford and young gun, Mark Watts, fresh off his double victory at the Cape Classic. This is to mention but a few of the potential victors, with the wave being relatively hard to read and exceptionally heavy, local knowledge is imperative leaving the door wide open for the dark horses to take the title. An added touch which is tradition for the event since it inception has been to award the winner of 'wave of the contest' with a chocolate cake, this is over and above the excellent prizes that have been awarded by our sponsors.

The event will consist of the Pro division only and is looking to make full use of the waiting period in order to have the event in the best possible conditions.

Keep your eyes peeled to www.sixty40.co.za/caverockchallenge2009 for updates on the event, entry forms and contact details.

The 2009 Cave Rock Challenge is proudly sponsored by HB, Custom X and LMNOP and will be contested at Cave Rock on Durban's Bluff on the best days of surf (minimum 6-8 foot) during the contest window of 14-24 April 2009.
