KZN Bodyboarding Champs held For CANSA

posted by Wayne du Preez on 7th December 2007

The KZN Bodyboarding championships final started out with very good weather and smallish waves at the weekend. With gale force north easterlies predicted for the day we were blessed that we had run the main rounds of the event the day before and only needed to run the final rounds. With all the activities of development rounds and clinics, the day before, it came down to separating the men from the boys.

The event was held to honour the memory of top bodyboarder Ivan Friedman who passed away from cancer a few months ago and to create awareness about the hazards of cancer especially from overexposure to the sun.

The U20 final, which was a very tightly contested final, saw Mark Watts (Westville) arriving late for his heat, but with all the adrenalin pumping managed to edge out the best of the best and clinch the final with some big air rolls and clean combos in very choppy wave conditions.

SA Boys champ Adam Waites from Durban North was also on form today and after just being edged out in the semi finals in the U20 division, which is not his normal division, secured a win for himself in the U15 division. It seems as thou Adam has continued his good form that we all saw in Plettenberg Bay at SA Champs earlier this year.

As the morning got on the wind picked up even more and really added some interesting results to the event with Sihle Xaba winning his first ever DK title in some very trying conditions. The development division saw new comers to the sport try their tricks out against one another but eventual winner was Jarryd Scott. It was great to see some new guys in the competitive scene and we really hoped they enjoyed themselves to return and compete again.

Agnetha Kruger who is quite new to competition won the Ladies Division and secured her first title as the KZN Champion. The Seniors Division saw some upsets in the form of interference calls and eventual winner Karl Liebenberg took the title with great wave choice and good solid wave riding. Karl is also the current Seniors SABA Champion for 2007. Last but not least were the Open guys who in really small waves pulled out all the stops to really show why they are the best in there class. With clean rolls and spinners, Alistair Taylor came out on tops as winner and also clinched himself a brand new board as first prize.

The event was really well run and everyone enjoyed themselves with great prizes from the following companies: CustomX, Hot Buttered, Wimpy, Bad Boy, Ocean and Earth, Gotcha, Debis Fleet Management, No Friends, CANSA, ATD Bodyboards, Beyond Coastal Sun Care, Elemenohpee, Bad Girl and Island Tribe.

The Central KZN Bodyboarding Association will be donating proceeds from the event to the CANSA Association, in memory of Ivan Friedman, on the 18th December at their offices. A huge thank you must go out to all sponsors, officials, committee members and AESSEAL (Pty Ltd) along with the Edward Daniels Charitable Trust Fund for donating money to CANSA for this event. We will be trying to make this an annual event and can hopefully join up once again with the sponsors and raise money for this really worthy cause. The event venue for next year is still to be confirmed but will either be in Richards Bay or on the South Coast of KZN.
