KZN Champs - in memory of Ivan Friedman - Day 1

posted by Wayne du Preez on 1st December 2007

The KZN Bodyboarding champs in memory of Ivan Friedman, a talented young Cape Town rider who recently lost a battle to cancer, kicked off at Durban's North Beach this Saturday. The event, which determines the champions for KZN Bodyboarding for 2008, is also helping to raise awareness to the perils of skin cancer, which affects tens of thousands of people each year. And appropriately enough, the sun came out blazing as if to reinforce the competition's message.

Some of the event's attendees and standout performances came from SABA drop knee champ Derek Footit from Uvongo, Jason Selby from Cape Town, current SA champ David Lee also from Uvongo, and Bay of Plenty TV star Sihle Xaba, who also had the highest scoring ride of the day.

SA Boys champ Adam Waites from Durban North was also on form today, riding against guys many years his senior.

Another highlight of the contest was the free development clinic for some underprivileged yet very enthusiastic kids. Debis Fleet Management kindly donated a board and swimfins to each rider, and Wimpy stoked them all out with a free lunch.

The 2 day event continues and wraps up this Sunday, December 2, at North Beach. The event is presented by CustomX, Hot Buttered, Wimpy, Bad Boy, Ocean and Earth, Gotcha, Debis Fleet Management, No Friends, CANSA, ATD Bodyboards, Beyond Coastal Sun Care, Elemenohpee, and Island Tribe.
