KZN Champs - Bodyboard for CANSA - in memory of Ivan Friedman

posted by Alistair Taylor on 19th November 2007

The South African bodyboarding community recently suffered the tragic loss of a young wave rider to the dreaded disease of cancer. Ivan Friedman, from Cape Town, was a talented and avid bodyboarder who passed away from cancer recently at the age of just 26. His passing was a reminder of how severe cancer can be, especially considering that he was a healthy young athlete.

With the increasing heat of the South African summer upon us, the Central KZN Bodyboarding association is staging an event in memory of Ivan, as well as to raise public awareness about the perils of overexposure to the sun and the likelihood of skin cancer caused by it. According to CANSA, a non profit organisation dedicated to fighting this disease, "Skin cancer is the most common cancer in South Africa with almost 20 000 new cases every year and over 700 deaths annually, says the Cancer Association of South Africa (CANSA). The good news is that skin cancer can be prevented if people respect the sun and learn how to be SunSmart by following advice from CANSA, which is a 76-year old non-profit organisation dedicated to fighting cancer to save lives."

The CKZNBA contest will be held at North Beach on the weekend of December 1 and 2. It is open to all members of the public and divisions include Pro, U20, U15, Ladies and Drop knee, as well as development for newcomers to the sport.

Some of the top names likely to attend are current SA champ David Lee from the south coast, current SABA drop knee champ Derek Footit, the current SA Junior champ Michael Ostler, current SA boys champ Adam Waites, and the top 3 pro SABA seeds, Wesley Fischer, Mark Watts and Alistair Taylor, all from Durban.

Proceeds from the event will be handed straight over to CANSA in a goodwill effort to help them in their cause. Free samples of leading sunscreen brands from Beyond Coastal and Island Tribe will be given away to the public at the contest.

For more information about this contest, please contact Wayne du Preez on 083 797 1697. Entry forms will be available at various surf shops throughout KZN and can be downloaded from the contest home page (see link below).
