The Venezuelan Sergio Alonso unexpectedly claimed victory in the Bodyboard Pro Festival 2007 held at Playa Los Caracas, Vargas state.

The World IBA (International Bodyboarding Association) event was staged in Playa Los Caracas, Vargas state, last weekend. The margariteño young, just 17 years old, won with an excellent selection of waves, radical manoeuvres, and the unconditional support from the audience that chanted his name and applauded continuously.

American Jeff Hubbard (top 9 in the world), Frenchman Amaury Laverne (top 3) and the Brazilian Uri Vadalao (World Champion 2005), couldn't stop him in the final.

Alonso was a genuine surprise to their opponents over the event, as he was gaining confidence as they passed the heat, to take the size of the waves, optimal for his style of surfing, and in the semi finals sent the first warning to leave their rivals on their way to Hawaiian Mike Stewart, a legend in the sport with nine titles to his credit.

Once past that difficult obstacle in his path to reach the final, the young native of Playa Parguito, Nueva Esparta state, lifted himself again in the final, and three waves that gave him a score greater than 6 points in each of these virtually assured the victory.

Once the siren sounded, Alonso became champion of this newly developed World Tour event in the Caribbean waters of Venezuela.
