Daniel Worsley (WP), Karla Costa-Taylor (CKZN) and Jared Houston (WP) won the premier Pro, Women and Junior divisions at the 2005 Rip Curl SA Bodyboarding Championships on Friday, 30 September at Herold’s Bay in the Southern Cape.

The 2005 Rip Curl SA Bodyboarding Championships saw some of the best prizes to date in the sport. The winner in each division walked away with a Rip Curl surf watch, Rossi bodyboard and Arnette sunglasses.

Daniel Worsley’s (WP) sensational performance in the Pro showdown saw him triumph over the highly competitive five times SA Champion Philip Rodrigues (CKZN). Ian Kruger (WP) clinched his best SABA career result to date with his third placing. 19 year old Neil Smith (SKZN) proved that he is a force to be reckoned with when he emerged as a finalist ahead of a field of the country’s best professional riders.

Former women’s world bodyboarding champion Karla Costa-Taylor (CKZN) blew everyone away with an outstanding performance in the Women’s final leaving spectators under no illusion as to who had won. Costa-Taylor won a R1 000 cash prize purse from a generous anonymous donor who wished to go under the title of “girl power”. Runner up Pamela Bowren (WP) beat the defending event champion Robyn Sorenson (CKZN) with Lyndall Pels (EP) in fourth.

By winning the Junior final Jared Houston (WP) collected his best contest result to date. 2004 SA Junior Champ Grant Lee (SKZN) was relegated to second place; last year’s boys division SA Champ Adam Morley (SC) scooped third with Emile van Vollenhoven (SKZN) taking fourth.

In the Drop Knee final where bodyboarders ride in a kneeling stance, Vaughn Harris (SC) successfully defended his 2004 title with talented Durban rider Wesley Fischer (CKZN) taking second. Former Drop Knee SA Champ Sacha Specker (WP) did not manage to keep his momentum going through to the final and placed third ahead of Warren Canepa (WP).

Steve Polinski (WP) snatched the Master’s trophy away from multiple SA Champion Mike van Huyssteen (CKZN) for the second consecutive year. Van Huyssteen fended off a strong attack from third placed Riaan du Preez (Boland).

Chris Elliot (EP) provided seasoned competitor Ian Campbell (CKZN) with tough competition in the U15 Boy’s decider but Campbell triumphed in the end. Matthew Webster made Boland proud by placing third with Dane Beales (CKZN) in fourth.

The Men’s final was dominated by Southern Kwa Zulu Natal with Margate stars Wayne Beekman and Martin Otto finishing first and second respectively. North beach local Sascha Taljaard (CKZN) ousted JP Nortier (WP) into fourth.

It was Lize-Mari Ras’s (CKZN) time to shine in the U16 Girls final. Ras’s polished performance earned her first place. In her first SA Champs, Liezl van Hollenhoven (SKZN) bodyboarded her way to second place with Tina Meyer (SC) third and Sonel Reynolds (WP) fourth.

U12 Boys winner Adam Waites (CKZN) continued on a roll this year after winning the Wedge Classic he went on to clinch the SA title at Herold’s Bay. Western Province standout Bas Koopmans (WP) finished as runner up, Daniel Thorpe (SC) took third and Charles Beaumont (SKZN) fourth.

The fast growing Development division was dominated by up and coming youngsters. Robbie Waites (CKZN) took home top honours, talented rider Zide Lelo (EP) defeated Matthew van Huyssteen (CKZN) and Jason Lawrence (WP) who placed third and fourth respectively.

In the team standings the final top three places mirrored last year’s results with Central KZN winning from Southern KZN with Maui and Sons Western Province finishing third. Hosts Southern Cape (sponsored by Reef) improved on their 2004 result of eighth place when they placed fourth.

The Rip Curl SA Bodyboarding Champs is hosted by the Southern Cape Bodyboarding Association and is co-sponsored by Environ, USN, Arnette Sunglasses (www.arnette.com), Rossi Boards (www.rossiboards.co.za), Cphynz Fins (www.cphynz.com) and Factory 7 (www.factory7.co.za).

Development clinics were run during the event to attract newcomers as well as uncover and develop fresh talent to add to the fast growing sport of competitive bodyboarding.

Steve “Spike” Pike from www.wavescape.co.za provided surf forecasts for the duration of the event.

At the SABA Exco Meeting held during the event Alistair Taylor was awarded the position of SABA Chairman with Sally Mellish announced as the Vice-Chairperson, Karla Costa-Taylor was nominated as Secretary and Pat Harris will be the Contest Director for 2006 SABA events. The bodyboarding community expressed their appreciation for Pat Harris’s dedication to the sport and for her hard work over the last few years. 2006 SA Champs will be hosted by SKZN under the watchful eye of SKZN Chairman Wayne Beekman.
