Central Kwa Zulu Natal (CKZN) Bodyboarding team are off to a great start in the 2005 SA Rip Curl Bodyboarding Championships held at Herold’s Bay from September 26 to 30. The one metre waves were contestable all day but the swell dropped off towards the afternoon.
The team are intent on defending their title in the chilly Southern Cape waters. CKZN are leading the team points race after winning all but three of the heats surfed on the first day of the five day national tournament.
“We are currently in the lead and in my opinion boy’s division rider Dane Beales shone today with two really high scoring waves in his heat. In the women’s division Karla Costa-Taylor made us proud by busting some huge rolls in her heat. Wesley Fischer stood out in the Drop Knee division with some huge floaters. We are really pleased with the team’s performance today and we are looking forward extending our lead tomorrow,” commented CKZN Bodyboarding Association Chairman Wayne du Preez.
Bas Koopmans (Western Province) charged in his U12 boys heats leaving his opponents in his wake. Top U12 boy’s division seeds Terence Pieterse (Southern KZN) and Johno Mellish (Western Province) shocked by scoring disappointingly low scores in the early rounds and will need to go all out in their next heats to ensure that they qualify for the final.
