2 to 6 July, 2004

Legendary swell guru Steve Pike (www.wavescape.co.za) has forecast a gigantic swell that is scheduled to batter the Cape shores in time for the inaugural Bayview Big Wave 2004. The 20 invited big wave bodyboarders are thrilled to hear the news which almost guarantees perfect conditions within their five day window period that extends from 2 to 6 July. According to Pike’s update the huge surf looks set to reach a climax on Saturday 3 July. Amazing wave sizes of up to 5-metres are expected.

All of this top class big wave bodyboarding action is set to take place at Bayview in the sleepy little fishing village of Hermanus which is an hour’s drive out of Cape Town. A big wave contest with a difference, Hermanus plays host to this year’s premier bodyboarding event, the Bayview Big Wave 2004.

The little known spot of Bayview is a ledging right hand breaking wave that grinds its way over a very sharp and shallow reef only a few feet below the surface with the resulting wave being a fearful prospect to anyone brave enough to take on its raw power. The bodyboarders are hell bent on pushing their own limits and that of the sport into new heights and it seems Neptune will provide the perfect platform for them to do so.

The criteria for the Bayview Big Wave is not limited to the biggest wave ridden, but the biggest and best manoeuvres executed in the critical section of the wave. The result will be breathtaking with spinners performed deep in the tube to the astronaut-like weightlessness of a huge forward air high above the sharp barnacles below. This will be a show worth watching, this is elite, this is underground, this is Cape power at its most ferocious, this is the Bayview Big Wave 2004.

The pre-contest briefing will be held on Thursday evening (July 1st) at Onverklaar Bar in Hermanus on the Main road upstairs from Zebra Crossing at 7.00 pm.

Sponsors include Surfwear House & Mike Stewart Bodyboards, Reef, Pionier Furniture, See and Sand holiday accommodation, Cape Media and Wavescape.

20 fearless riders have entered including Marcel Habbets, Hankus Loubser (CT), Mark McCarthy (Zululand), Jono Sutherland, John Catlin, Aadam and Ishmael Grant, Henk Esterhuisen, Johan De Goede (CT), Justin Walker, Renee Hanekom and Werner Adenhoff. Mark and Ryan Jukker, Stephan Du Toit, Sean Olberholzer, Wayne Gardner, Wade Harrison and 2004 South African team bodyboarders Vaughan Harris (Southern Cape), and Darren Halse (Amanzimtoti - Durban) will be in action.
