Day 1 of Koko's South Coast Bodyboarding Classic dishes up massive swell!!

posted by Martin Otto on 22nd April 2011

Competitors for The Koko's South Coast Bodyboarding Classic were greeted to massive surf this morning at
7am at Uvongo Beach. It was decided to hold off heats as it was predicted to calm down as the day progressed. By 11:30am the first of the Pro's were sent in in a bit smaller but still rather sizey surf. The southeasterly started picking up unfortunately making wave selection vital in order to advance through the tough heats.

As can be expected from this high level of competition, there were early upsets with top riders getting knocked out. 2007 SA Pro Champion David Lee (Uvongo) battled to get the more solid rides and unfortunately bowed out of the competition. Joining him is Matthew Lombard (Boland), Grant van der Wagen (Uvongo), Brendon van Rooyen (Ramsgate), Stephen du Preez (Durban) and Stefan Coetzee (Richards Bay). Local Southern Natalians Rory Fellow-Smith, Dane Klusener and Rayner Venter managed to win their heats together with Adam Morley (Mossel Bay) who nearly didn't get to enter the contest. Also advancing is Derek Footit (Uvongo), Reinhardt du Toit (Richards Bay), Eugene Meyer (Cape Town) and Bradley Moys (Shelly Beach). They will all face the seeded riders in the quarter finals tomorrow if the conditions are suitable.

A five man round 1 Juniors heat was in after the Pros and right from the start it was a very determined Claude Coetzer (EP) who took the heat. Warren du Preez (Shelly Beach) was relieved to pick up 2nd place after a slight totalizing error was discovered which resulted in him advancing. Kerwyn Laas (South Port), Jordan Nickson and Tyler Vorster (Durban) all have to take up spectator positions from here on.

Up next were the first round of Mens and it was again an all out local affair with Jaryd van Daalen (Amanzimtoti), Gordon Harris (Ramsgate) and Nico Muller (Amanzimtoti) battling it out for those last 2 spots in the Mens semi-finals. Jaryd van Daalen secured 1st place in some difficult conditions with Gordon Harris taking second place. Nico Muller is out of the Mens division but not out of the competition as he will still feature in the Dropknee division and will be a hot contender.

Boys round 1 sees a 5 man heat to decide the final with naturally only one rider being dropped. Unfortunately that rider getting dropped was 8year old Alex Nutt (Margate) who always shows a lot of heart. Your Boys final consists of Tristan Roberts (Boland) Michael Mynhardt( Margate), Jean-Carl Johnson (Uvongo) and Pieter Meiring (Cape Town).

The event was called of until tomorrow when really good conditions are predicted and we want to have an 7am start so be sure to be there bright and early

Thanks again to our sponsors who made this event possible namely Koko's Club and Grill (Margate), South Coast Tourism, Reef Wetsuits, Anytime Holidays, Wavehouse Gateway, JFK Photography, Surf M'Ocean, Panarottis Margate, Nu Form, Rockstar Energy Drinks and Pavillion Restaurant (Uvongo).
