All systems go for Koko's South Coast Bodyboarding Classic

All the preparation and planning is finally over and the day of The Koko's South Coast Bodyboarding Classic is upon us. This coming Easter Weekend sees a hive of activity on the Lower South Coast of KZN. The focus will be on the annual Koko's South Coast Classic being held at Uvongo beach which see over a hundred of the country’s best bodyboarders descend on the holiday mecca.

The event has a long history and over the last 13 years has been hosted at both Saint Michael's Beach and Margate. This year the change venue has moved to the idyllic Uvongo beach with its lovely cliffs and spectacular waterfall. Let’s not forget the main reason for the move! Uvongo has a reputation for producing good bodyboarding waves. The 2006 SA Bodyboarding Champs were held at this Beach including many other local club and provincial contests so the beach is well known to the riders.

“The sand banks are perfect there lately with a nice right-hander running off the point onto the shallow sandbar. Don’t forget the lefts that run from behind the cafe, that bank has really been producing with all the east swell we have been having lately. All in all we are very excited about the move and look forward to an awesome contest”, commented local organizing provincial Chairman Wayne Beekman.

International competitor and reigning SA Champ, Mark McCarthy (Richards Bay) is jetting back to South Africa after a well deserved 3rd place at an Australian International Bodyboarding Tour event at The Box. His schedule is extremely tight and if all goes to plan he will have just hours to spare before he jumps in the water at the Koko's South Coast Classic starting this Friday. Mark has a good track record on the South African Bodyboarding Tour but is intent on bettering his 3rd place position he achieved way back in 2006 at this beach.

The contest briefing will be at Koko's Restaurant and Club in Margate and will take place on Thursday 21 April at 6:00 PM.

This year's event is proudly sponsored by Koko's Club and Grill (Margate), South Coast Tourism, Reef Wetsuits, Anytime Holidays, Wavehouse Gateway, JFK Photography, Surf M'Ocean, Panarottis, Nu Form and Rockstar Energy Drinks

There are numerous product and cash prizes up for grabs in various divisions. Koko's Club and Grill in Margate has put up cash as well as South Coast Tourism. Anytime Holidays will be giving away amazing prizes in the form of weekends away for 2 at various destinations nationwide. Surf M'Ocean Surf Shop is also putting up R500 voucher to the rider who busts the biggest maneuver of the event. JFK Photography will be hosting an expression session during the event. First place gets a framed photo of their winning move and R300 cash. Right now you are thinking, ‘but what about the traditional skimming contest?’ Don’t worry we haven’t forgotten about this and it will definitely be hosted if conditions allow.

Remember it’s the only SABA circuit event in KZN this year so be sure to make your way down to Uvongo Beach or follow us on twitter and sixty40.
