Deon Meyer wins in New Zealand

posted on 1st February 2011

With not much news coming out of the comp we caught up with Deon to fill us in on what went down.

The event was scheduled to run this past Saturday and Sunday at Port Waikato, but Saturday was completely blown out with gale force winds and a level 3 cyclone passing by. New Zealand was rattled with hectic floods and tsunami warnings.

With conditions calming slightly the event ran on Sunday 30 January. Conditions were solid 4-6ft, but still with an unmanageable rip current, so they moved it to a sheltered beach break a bit down the coast. I got in for my Pro heats and got knocked in quarter final because I was picking the wrong waves.

Later in the day Storm Morgan and I were up in the Men’s/Amateurs finals and I was super focused and hungry for a win. I managed to just beat the current NZ Champ in his backyard, as my strategy paid off. Storm came 4th out of the 5 man heat.

Dave Burger unfortunately got knocked in his u/18 heats.

The prize giving was later the arvo with a good vibe all around as the prizes were being handed out.

I claimed victory in Men’s/Amateur division and Turbo team rider Ben McKinnon took the open division.

This is the first time a Saffa had won a NZ tour event!

Congrats Deon well done from the sixty40 crew!
