Day 1 at the 2010 Turbo Pipeline Pro

posted by Tim Doman on 20th February 2010

The first official day of competition has run at the 2010 Turbo Bodyboards Pipeline Pro Presented by Body Glove.

This multi-cultural bodyboarding event attracts competitors from all four corners of the globe, with Brazil, USA, France, Australia, Israel, South Africa and Canada among the many.

Waves were large in the 6 to 8 feet range and winds varied from light offshore to strong cross shore, pushing the riders in a variety of testing waves.

Drew Innocend of Queensland Australia, was the most impressive surfer of the day.

Innocend notched up a 17.60 combined wave total in his round three heat, the highest of the day. This included a near perfect 9.83 score for being spat out

of a huge Backdoor Barrell and launching into a massive backflip. All of Innocend's waves were executed with a beautiful precision.

Finishing second in the heat was Tom Smith also of Australia with 14.83 and in third Daniel Fonesca of Portugal in 10.74.

"I saw Tom get a couple of sick waves at Backdoor and I knew that I had to go for it" said an elated Drew Innocend.

Innocend will have his work cut out, moving into round four against local Hawaiian Kona Kuailani, Sam Bennett (Australia) and Josh Garner (Australia).

International Head Judge Chico Garritano was impressed with the level of riding on day one.

"Pipeline shows the power of the surfer and it really separates who chooses the best waves to surf" said Chico.

"We had some amazing performances from some of the guys that came through from trials who were surfing like the top seeds.

"Backdoor was more powerful today and this resulted in the higher scores".

The event is now forced to take a two day break due to local North Shore regulations, however epic conditions are forecast between Monday and Wednesday of next week so the script is set for a grand showdown.

On the South African front --- Vijay Maharaj moved through rounds 1 & 2 and met fellow countryman Alistair Taylor who owned his heat with big flips out of Pipe and a massive invert over Backdoor. Vijay unfortunately needed a better scoring second wave and did not progress.

The comp is off on Saturday and Sunday but reports are that the forecast looks good for some waves early next week.

Charles Pass, Alistair Taylor and Sacha Specker are all up in Round 4.
