Boland Bodyboarding welcomes contestants to the Reef SA Champs 2009

posted by Gustav Botha on 26th September 2009

Host chairman Gustav Botha, Boland Bodyboarding Association, welcomes visiting provinces to the first champs to be held on the West coast.

Welcome to the first ever REEF South African Bodyboarding Championships on the West Coast hosted by Boland Bodyboarding

We wish you a fantastic stay on the West Coast and hope you all experience the warm hospitality that the area is renowned for.

Program:
Please find attached the program laid out in tabular form. It is important that you ensure you are on the beach at 06H30 that you have sufficient time to assess the conditions. Note: if we surf Elands Bay we will start the day at a little later, but will finish at 18H00 depending on the surf conditions. All the other venues are West facing and we can only judge until 14H30 due to the glare.

Safety:
Please read the emergency plan that is attached - it contains all the numbers in case of emergency. The area is relatively crime free, but visitors are always soft targets. Be street wise and do not let valuables lie around; lock your rooms and cars. The police have offered to be extra vigilant. Ensure the cars are all parked on the sea side of the road facing Lamberts Bay; no car must be parked on the side of the road towards Elands Bay. This will ensure the safety of the contest attendees and ensure a safe traffic flow.

Environment:
We are in a semi desert area of our country and therefore the fauna is susceptible to long term damage if walked upon. Please stay on the demarked path areas and off the dunes. We will be walking over private land to get to the surf spots and therefore treat it with respect.
Please ensure all your litter is placed in the plastic bags that will be under your team captain's supervision. If you are caught littering your team will be placed on toilet duty for the day (this is not so nice as you will have to clean the toilets every hour and handle the honeysuckle pump when the toilets are drained).

Adopt a Kumba Iron Ore Development Kid:
This is a new concept to SA Bodyboarding and we wish each team to adopt 6 kids. Remember these kids all come from previously disadvantaged areas and do not have the finances to travel to the contest area. They have never been to a Bodyboarding contest and if we want to get development to have real impact we should all do as much as we can to expose them to our sport for the short period that we are there.
On Monday the 28th we expect all the teams to be present at the handover at 15H00 on the beach at Yo Yo's where the team captains will be handed their 6 kids. We will then enter the water and attempt to ride a single wave with all 80 riders. The rest of that afternoon will be spent on training with the kids. The team can then decide to take the kids to Yo Yo's on a daily basis at 15H30 do Bodyboarding development. We will have development photo sessions on Wednesday en Thursday.
Remember the biggest majority of the kids have only been in the water for 6 hours and this is the 1st time they will have flippers.

Support our local Sponsors:
There are various restaurants within walking distance of Eureka. Please support the Sentra grocer and greet Boesman and tell him you are here for the Reef SA Champs and thank him for his sponsorship. The local water is brakish so buy your water from the local sponsor Sentra. Sentra will be fully stocked with REEF Bodyboarding gear, so if you have breakages you know where to find quality product. The locals have never experienced Bodyboarding and let's leave a lasting positive impression.

Final word:
Let's make sure we treat all the locals with respect and go out of our way to be friendly and greet everyone - let us make this the best SA's ever!
