Don't Stop Dreaming - Chasing Dreams London Premiere

posted by Allan Horsfield on 13th November 2008

Walking into the Slug in Fulham it is often common to see waves rolling across the many plasma screens and TV's littered around the place. Closer inspection reveals that the Slug has 2 surfing DVD's Montaj and Blue Horizon on constant repeat. But one of the plasma's above the front door had something different, it was the starting page for Don't Stop Dreaming TV's first episode Chasing Dreams. Then as I scanned the room I started to recognize faces that I had seen in line-ups across South Africa.

Everyone had gathered to come support Don't Stop Dreaming first instalment. This project is the brainchild of Colin van Dongen. Colin's love for bodyboarding is second to none. When you talk to Colin you feel the love he has for his bodyboarding and his stoke shines through in his productions. Colin has been a pioneer for bodyboarding productions in South Africa and is now taking his production skills to the world.

Chasing Dreams was being screened throughout the venue in both bottom and top sections of the Slug on 11 Plasmas. Cerven Cotter from Pixeldeath was setting the mood of the premiere on fire with some amazing tracks from Rise Against, The Flatliners and other great punk bands. And the bar was supplying jugs of snakebite at a reduced rate.

A raffle sheet was passed around for a Nomad bodyboard and fins sponsored by Nomad & Factory 7. This raffle was in aid of supporting a Saffa on the world tour. Sixty40 are helping to collect money for Mark Mac, Spex and Wes Fischer so that they can make a go of the world tour next year. Please help if you can. Every little bit helps getting these boys to the contests that could see them being crowded the next Saffa world champion. Visit www.sixty40.co.za/world-tour-fund for more info.

Having spent many nights in the Slug, I was amazed at how full the upstairs venue was. The room was full of bodyboarding legends like Jason Boddy, Billy Thiel, Jamie King, Steve Keuning, Ryan McSkimming, James Moolenschot and women's legends Robin Neary (Sorenson) and Inge Pieters had all come to support Colin. Someone suggested that it was like being at a contest briefing back at home. Everyone was primed and ready to see what Chasing Dreams had to offer.

Chasing Dreams was amazing. Period! In my option is by far the best production to come out of South Africa and is up there with the best in the world. Colin's dream of boosting the identity of bodyboarding across the world is shown in the way he has put this production together. His editing is so smooth and the action is non-stop. The room echoed with hoots from beginning to end as people jostled to get a glimpse of the action. With awesome action from Hawaii last season and a solid flow section this production was amazing. Colin's dedication to his mate Ivan Friedman is awesome, you feel like you knew Ivan after watching it. The crowded consensus was unanimous; Colin had nailed it!

After a great production, Cerven cranked up the punk again and the party kicked into gear. With many snakebites being drunk and many stories of waves/ surfs being told, Chasing Dreams had brought together a bunch of bodyboarders in a landlocked city. Everyone's stoke levels went through the roof and promises of an old school Hawaiian season were getting thrown around.

I caught up with Colin to get his feelings about his first episode and what he has in store for future episodes.

AH: Good evening Colin. After your first showing of Don't Stop Dreaming here in London, what do you think of tonight's turn out?
CVD: I am really stoked, everything went according to plan. I want this to be more of an international production, so we'll be pulling bodyboarders from around the world. It not only pulling South African guys, we are getting Hawaiians, the Portuguese, the Brazilians, Mexican's, it is all about boosting bodyboarding around the world. That is what the whole DSD series is all about. This was just the first one called Hawaii.Flow. It is full of the best footage I got from Hawaii this last season. There is dedication to Ivan Friedman, a really good friend of mine and his fight against cancer. He lived such an awesome life; everyone was stoked with his section. Check it out. I am looking forward to seeing all the guys in South Africa at the IMAX on the 29th November.

AH: What will be expecting in our next instalments of Don't Stop Dreaming?
CVD: We have got so much footage on backlog it is insane. This was just the first one. The next episodes to look forward to are United Kingdom, Mexico, and Indonesia. We are just going to keep going from here. We have sick stuff from Portugal coming. I'm hoping it is going to boost bodyboarding worldwide and Im currently working on all the international broadcasting. We are going to make it happen.

AH: Anyone you want thank right now?
CVD: I just always want that God, he is so good to me. I have been so radically blessed over and over again. I am so stoked to walk with him. I'd like to thank Cerven from PixelDeath for doing the music on the video and this evening. I want to thank all the guys; you are all in the credits. Darren for all the crazy trips and helping with footage from the IBA. Just being part of the bodyboarding family that is what it is all about.
