The Northern KwaZulu-Natal Bodyboarding Association are proud to be hosting the 22nd Annual Science / Reef South African Bodyboarding Championships 2008 presented by Zululand Fever. The event will take place from the 29th September to 3rd October at Alkantstrand Beach, Richards Bay.

This prestigious event will bring the countries top bodyboarders in 8 teams along with their supporters and support staff to Richards Bay for 5 days of competition over the end of 3rd Term School Holidays. National titles will be competed for with this being the final event of the year. Fierce competition will result in deciding the top provincial team.

Science Bodyboards and Reef Wetsuits have once again come on board as the main product prize sponsors for the competition where the new South African champions will be crowned. Science and Reef have been involved in the sponsorship of SA Champs over the past few years now, helping to grow the sport and contribute to the successful running of this annual event. Joining them for the first time this year will be Ocean & Earth.

The Zululand Fever newspaper, part of the Witness Group, have signed on as official media partner, sponsoring as well as helping in organisation and promotion of the event. Supporting sponsors for this years competition are Ocean Eyewear, Steers, Upperdeck Restaurant, Lockt_In and Alliance Graphics.

Team NKZN will be hoping to make their best appearance at SA Champs yet with the advantage of home ground knowledge and some very capable riders. Mark McCarthy, fresh from his win in the Doninos Bodyboard Pro in Spain will be joining the team this week. Rheinhard du Toit (pictured) has been training really hard and is due for a big performance in both the Dropknee and Pro Divisions. There is also a lot expected of the riders from Ballito and those in the Mens Division such as Lennie Muller and Nic Phillips.

Competitors and spectators alike can expect to enjoy some great bodyboarding action on the shallow banks off Alkantstrand. The harbour dredging operations that created the "Super Bank" are ongoing and make conditions ideal for high performance bodyboarding. The organisers are hoping that the howling North East winds that plague the KZN coast during this season do not make their appearance. Some of the more seasoned competitors at this years event will remember the awesome conditions the last time Richards Bay hosted the SA Championships in 2000.

The organising committee is offering advertising space in the official programme to raise funds to successfully run the event. Bookings for advertising close 17 September. Contact John 072 245 3996 or Rheinhard 083 280 0519 for details.

Big up to Reef and Science for once again sponsoring a SABA event. I'm quite bummed that I can't be there to either ride or support My fellow Southern Natalians but I'll be in France at the time.

Good luck to all competitors and teams.
