In Search of the Perfect Wave Camp - Review

Day 1, Friday.

Arriving at Millers point just outside Simon’s Town in False Bay, we were greeted with a strong SE wind. Unfortunately this wind is onshore, but that didn’t stop us from hastily packing our surf gear, jumping into the car and off to find some waves. The search led us to Kalk Bay Reef. Not know as the most forgiving wave but the conditions were small and all the guys and girls raced into the water to get some fun uncrowded waves.

After the evening surf everyone went back to the house for supper and chilled out watched some bodyboarding DVD’s with Byron, Johnny and Andre Maritz.

Day 2, Saturday.

Everyone was up early and was amping for the prospect of finding some good waves. The wind was again SE but was forecast to be gale force the whole day! The swell was also forecast to increase during the day so the decision was made to go to Cape Point Nature Reserve. Some fun waves were found, but the wind was far too strong so we left the reserve to find some other waves.

We ended up standing in the Kalk Bay parking lot, looking at some chunky solid waves hitting the reef. The swell had increased due to the wind swell and everyone had some solid, grinding waves. With everyone exiting the water with wide smiles on there faces, we were off to find more late afternoon waves. Our next stop was Noordhoek.

The swell had increased considerably and Hoek was solid! The wind by this stage was insane and was swirling around in the small bay. A mutual consensus was reached not to surf, so everyone piled back into the car and went back to the house.

Day 3, Sunday.,

Waking up on the last day was like breathing fresh air! The wind had almost totally dropped off and the swell was a fun 3ft on both coasts! Mmmm, the possibilities were endless! Our first Spot check was The Hoek. We found super fun 2-3ft perfect peaks.

Everyone decided to have our last free surf and the final contest here between the academy riders.
All riders raced into the water only to find that the water was freeeeezing cold! A quick, super fun free surf was had and then everyone met on the rocks for the judges to explain the contest rules. Judges, Byron Loubser, Johhny Maritz and guest judge Ian Thurtell (aka “Flying Ferret”) explained what exactly the criteria were. 45min heat with each rider claiming 2 waves which they thought would be contestable.

In the end the final was between Roger Pardoe, Anneka Pentz and Greg Sarron.
All the riders had very few waves in the beginning, but Greg Sarron opened up the scoring with a very well ridden barrel. Next was Anneka, getting a set wave and riding it with a clean style. With time starting to run out Greg got another good looking wave, spun on take off and rolled the close-out. Anneka got her last score by dropping into a small right, and getting a quick cover up. Roger unfortunately never found the waves that he needed to challenge the other riders!

After the contest everyone went back to the house for the prize-giving.

Final Results

1. Greg Sarron
2. Anneka Pentz
3. Roger Pardoe
