The Nomad Brett Young Memorial Trials got underway today in some of the most hectic weather Sydney has seen in years. Conditions were arctic like with strong ice cold onshore winds and big stormy seas with waves being recorded in the 6 - 8m range of the Sydney coastline.

The huge swell bombarded Cronulla Point with solid 6-8ft waves in the morning combined with winds gust of up to 60 knots+ . When the event got underway most riders were seemed confronted by the raging swells which saw some competitors struggled with the surging currents and blustery conditions.

With the trials being seen as the gateway to the infamous HUMAN Cronulla Shark Island challenge, it was only fitting to see the riders battle it out in the big swells. Those who used their greater wave knowledge and contest strategy were the ones to progress.

Local knowledge did play a huge advantage for riders like Ben Sawyer and Shaun Pyne, both were standouts in their heats. Other standouts were Mitch Wade, Matt Young, Josh Casey, Ricky Michael, Glen Thurston, Paul Blaz, Jimmy Leayr, Shaun Petersen and Lawrence Tierney.

As the day progressed the waves continued to rise and the gale force winds finally became unbearable. As riders were finding it hard to make the challenging paddle from land a safety concern was raised.
As solid 8-10ft monster bombs rolled into a wild Cronulla Point organisers agreed that it would be the safest option to put the event on hold after Round 2 was completed.

Forecast is for much the same - Very large and confused surf around 10ft+ at first, easing to 6-8ft during the afternoon. Smaller waves inside protected southern corners, easing from 5-6ft to 4-5ft by the afternoon. Fresh and gusty S/SE winds easing, possibly tending more SW in places at times.

A call will be made first thing in the morning as to whether the event runs or placed on hold for conditions to settle later in the afternoon
