Supremely fit Sihle Xaba (Dbn) is bound to make waves at this year’s Vodacom Bodyboarding Classic which takes place at the Bay of Plenty beach on 8, 9 and 10 July. Professional lifeguard Xaba who has been riding waves for over 14 years competed for South Africa in Portugal at the 1998 ISA World Surfing Games and placed third against Ireland in the ISA pre-event trials.
The South Beach resident boasts plenty of big wave experience having travelled to Hawaii for a month’s stay in 1998. Xaba was a semi-finalist at last year’s Vodacom Bodyboarding Classic and has made his intentions for 2004 clear.
“Look out,” warned Xaba, “get ready for some of the best bodyboarding moves ever. I am super fit and ready to attack. Last year I made the Vodacom Bodyboarding Classic semi-finals and this time I am going all out to take the winner’s cheque.”
Xaba, who excelled in the recent Natal Lifesaving Champs by placing third in the flags event, embarks on a gruelling training schedule daily.
“I swim between 1.5 to 3 kilometres every morning and then I run about 10 kilometres to train with all of the lifeguards. My main focus is bodyboarding all my other sports are more like hobbies to me,” said Xaba.
