Berea resident Robyn Sorenson has her sights set firmly on defending her Vodacom Bodyboarding Classic title at the Bay of Plenty. The Vodacom Bodyboarding Classic is the richest bodyboarding contest on the 2004 calendar with a whopping total purse of R22 000. The 4A rated South African Bodyboarding Association (SABA) sanctioned event has caused a major stir by awarding equal prize money to the Open Men and Women’s divisions who will each be vying for R10 000. This unprecedented forward-thinking move has made history in SA and has prompted females in their droves to make the trip to Durban to ride the waves over the 8, 9 and 10 July. Riders will earn valuable points on the domestic bodyboarding circuit that counts towards crowning the SABA champions at the end of the year and helps to determine the national team members.

Sorenson who has grown up bodyboarding at the neighbouring beach has eight years of experience behind her; combined with her local knowledge she is a clear favourite going into the event.

“I’m really excited although I think it will probably be harder this year because the prize money Vodacom has put up is huge. A lot more girls are going to enter but I won’t let that put me off I am going to do my best to defend my title,” commented the determined 21 year old.

Sorenson already has a 2004 SABA contest victory under her belt; she won the Wimpy/ Rossi Pro-Am in Margate. The petite blonde has been training by jogging most mornings as well as clocking up as much water time as possible ahead of the prestigious Vodacom Bodyboarding Classic. Sorenson has studied a one year Sports Management course and is currently the Assistant Manager for the Lizzard Surf Shop at Gateway.

The Vodacom Bodyboarding Classic will be one of the highlights of the Vodacom Beach Africa festival which takes place at North Beach from 2 to 11 July.
