McCarthy wins big at Kumba West Coast Classic

posted by Simon Heale on 1st April 2013

A windless, perfect morning at Famous Last Words, with 3-4ft waves, was what set the scene for the final day of the Kumba West Coast Classic.

First to hit the water were the Men's semi finals. With a slight high tide bump and unpredictability they managed some clean riding. Tjoekie, Chris van der Westhuysen and Andre van Zyl impressed with clean rolls and pocket riding. The Men's final consisted of those 3 riders as well as Michael Meyer. Right from the get go it looked like Michael Meyer had a strangle hold on the heat after a good invert and the only perfect 10 of the contest for a barrel to roll. The final results are, 4th Chris van der Westhuysen, 3rd Johan (Tjoekie) De Goede, 2nd Andre van Zyl, 1st Michael Meyer.

The DK final was tough as the landings were hard and the drops steep. Iain Campbell pulled some smooth snaps and Vaughn Harris got an excellent barrel as well as attempting a large close-out floater. The winner of the DK crown was Iain Campbell, 2nd Vaughn Harris, 3rd Rory Fellow-Smith, 4th Terence Pieters.

The Ladies final saw Suzie Vester getting back in form with heavy rolls and Rosie Lombard going for clean manoeuvres on any wave she could find. There were some heavy beat downs on the sets but all the ladies kept on going. Final results for this heat is 5th Goergie, 4th Susan Joubert, 3rd Suzie Vester, 2nd Rosie Lombard and the winner Inge Pieters.

Boys final saw Micky Du Toit getting clean barrels and rolls and impressing the judges with his already mature style of riding. Winner is Wian Oosthuisen with Micky Du Toit 2nd, Joshua Pascoe 3rd and Alex Nutt 4th.

Grand Masters final had relative new comer Leon Nel showing that he means business by completing clean rolls and smooth riding. Len Bradford 4th, Marcel Habets 3rd, Leon Nel 2nd and the winner Riaan du Preez.

Masters final went out and the waves started to turn, the rain and wind picked up and the waves got heavier as the tide drained out.The winner Morne Loubscher, Sean Oberhotlzer and Simon Williamson 2nd and 3rd respectively.

The Kumba Iron Ore Development final went out and these new groms took on the heavy beach break with a smile on their faces. Going for the biggest waves and attempting rolls, they really show potential for competing other divisions in the future!

Up next were the Junior semi finals - Wesley Coetzee and Wilder Shultz were the easy stand outs as they went attacking any lip they could find, big ARS's, Inverts and rolls combinations sent them soaring into the finals. The finals made for great entertainment as they all went as hard as they could for the title. Luke Kitchin linking up some great ARS to roll combo's. 4th Wilder Shultz, 3rd Wes Coetzee, 2nd Luke Kitchen, 1st Brode Gleeson.

The hotly contested Pro semi finals went in and flips were the name of the game. Iain Campbell impressing again with large clean rolls and smooth banking reverses. Unfortunately Tristan Roberts got knocked out due to an interference call and wasn't able to advance to the finals despite pulling off ARS to roll combo's and an air reverse. Mark McCarthy pulled off a few big backflips in true international style and flare and had the crowd going wild on the beach.

In the final Mark had backflip after backflip. Michael Ostler got a set wave and did a huge invert but unfortunately didn't land it. Iain Campbell did smooth ARS's and yet another clean reverse off a smaller wave. Terence Pieters struggled to find rhythm for the first few minutes but then managed to link up a smooth ARS to roll combo.
Your new Kumba West Coast Classic 2013 Champion is Mark McCarthy
2nd Michael Ostler, 3rd Iain Campbell, 4th Terence Pieters.

Wave of the contest went to Michael Meyer, Best rider went to Wilder Shultz and Best move went to Tristan Roberts
