Kumba West Coast Classic 2013 - Day 2

posted by Simon Heale on 30th March 2013

With the arrival of massive swell in the morning, the call way made to run day 2 of the Kumba Iron Ore West Coast Classic at Yo-Yo's. This proved to be a very good call as the waves were going off and everyone was linking up maneuvers from the outside right into the shore break.

The day started with DK Semi finals and Iain Campbell was the definite stand out doing hard backhand turns and clean floaters, impressing the judges and advancing to the finals along with Vaughn Harris, Terence Pieters and Rory Fellow-Smith.

The Juniors quarter finals had a large upset with Tristan Roberts falling out. The stand out riders of this division were Niklas Martin, Wilder Shultz and Wes Cotzee all linking up good clean roll combinations.

In the Pro division Tristan Roberts let loose his anger of falling out in Juniors and dominated his heat, with ARS to roll combinations from the back using the full potential of the wave. Terence Pieters, Iain Campbell and Mark McCarthy all advanced by linking 3 or more moves on a wave and showing the other competitors how to ride in these conditions. Unfortunately last years winner, Matthew Lombard got knocked out, which means the field is now wide open for a new winner.

In the Boys division Wian Oosthuizen won his heat but landing clean outside rolls off the big set waves, landing him a place in the final along with Joshua Pascoe, Alex Nutt and Micky Du Toit.

The Mens division saw Andre Van Zyl clean up again, looking like he is on a war path to the finals. Chris vd Westhuyzen and Micheal Meyer also advancing to the semi finals with big clean rolls and reverses.

The Kumba Iron Ore "Adopt-a-Grom" session went out in awesome waves just after lunchtime. Each grom rider had a pro with him, and helping them out in the amazing waves. An hour later and many smiles and waves were shared. A great success and an incredible initiative by Kumba. Its easy to see the difference bodyboarding makes in the lives of these young kids.

A massive thanks goes out to Reef Wetsuits and Coca Cola for supporting us throughout the day, keeping us both cool and warm when we need it.

Day 3 tomorrow and what a day it will be as a new champion will be crowned.
