Well I got my first board this weekend (a Elemenohpee Skipp Comp) and was just wondering if I could ask some questions.

    1. What are your thoughts on this board?
    2. I dont want to go out and buy myself a wet suite until I know I am going to enjoy this, so am I going to survive the cape town waters with just a rash vest on?
    3. Is Milnerton a good place to go and start to get the feel? Any other suggestions?

    Thanks in advance!

Dude the skipp comp is a good board, way better than what you would need as a beginner so be very stoked!!! You will need a westsuit for sure, and don't even think about bodyboaring without flippers, cause there is no point. If you surf false bay in summer you might get away with a rashie / baggies, but for the atlantic side - unless you want to get hyperthermia, you will need to get a wetsuit. Check out http://www.factory7.co.za for some sweet deals on a reef suit.

    Ahoy...

Good choice on becoming a Booger!

I agree with Peter on the wetsuit issue try Factory7 or if you don't have the cash for a new one trying looking in the Cape Ads for a second hand wettie. Swim Fins are also really important!

The best place to learn on the West Coast is Big Bay because the waves are mellow, you won't get a serious thumping and there's very little, if any rip current.
Milnerton...well i've never ridden there, but it seems mellow enough for a learner...i don't know about the rip currnet-there's alot of open ocean around Milnerton and that usually means there could be some rip.

    Happy hunting!

Thanks for your comments! I will look into a wet suite!

What about the beach opposite the caravan park in Melkbos? Good Spot?

"What about the beach opposite the caravan park in Melkbos? Good Spot?"

Van Strand has it's days-usually when everywhere else is a bit flat.
I have never had a great surf there...in my opinion it isn't such a great bodyboarding wave.

If you are going to try surfing in Melkbos try the more populated beach near the Spur-there's a good little wave just in front of the public toilets with lots of groms messing in the shorey.

Otherrwise like i say try Big Bay-if things get hectic there's always life guards, where as there are no life guards at Van Strand.

I learnt to bodyboard at Big Bay.

:D I have to agree with the rest of the guys on this one.

You most def need a wetty and some fins, unless you like being the colour blue.

As for a good wave to start on, I would recomend big bay much for the same reasons as they have provided, but my main reason is that u would have less flack from "locals". Melkbos locals can get a little nasty with newbies.

If I could give you one bit of advice when starting off... Dont Drop Inn on a wave if another rider has it already and if a rider is on a wave and u r paddeling back out dont paddel for section of the wave that has not broken, as kak as it is rather paddel for the section that has already broken.

Locals get very anti with u if u get in there way.

Thats pretty much all I have to say.

welcome to the sport of the men of men. look for a REEF TRI_FLEX. it is not to expensive and very flexi and warm. REEF does a lot to the sport of bodyboarding, like sponsering comps and top riders. the back up service are the best with a life time gaurantee on stiching. if you want to spoil yourself get a REEF IGNITION. melkbos at the old toilets (now a shop) are the best to start. sit and watch the kids go crazy, check out as many dvd's as you can. ask the fellow bodyboarders and they will always give you good advice. if you see my REEF/SCIENCE corsa bakkie came and say hi. check out the suits on http://www.reef.co.za or on http://www.factory7.co.za

Rather get the 2/3 Reef Ignition rather than the 4/3 Tri Flex, its almost as warm and about 4x more flexable. You will be able to catch way more waves and will get way less tired cause the wetsuit is so nice and flexy. Flip, that thing feels like you are surfing in your pajama's its so comfy!! Get hold of Derek at Factory7.co.za
he will be able to hook you up with one for sure at a sick price!

    Update....

Got my fins... Viper V5 Flex

I need to get a custom suit made as I have a very "unique" body :)

Reef says they can only custom make the XF Reef. Any comments on this suit?

I am going to see if I can't get a spring suit for the time been.

Don't know the suit personally, but i'll vouch for any Reef wetsuit...

They're long lasting, warm and don't cost a fortune...

I say...ask Len if you can't perhaps view one before making an order.
