Boogers with no respect

  • February 2007
    Boogers,

Looks this is not taken directly to anyone specific and im not after anyones side here... but

What the heck is going on with Bodyboarders and there attitudes to the beachs and breaks!? All the time now around CT im seeing boogers trashing things, breaking things throwing there rubbish and making the beaches filthy!! I mean come on guys what kind of name are we giving out there for Bodyboarding?!

I dont mean to sound like a whinning old fart but sheesh bru, seeing people lately looking at boogers throwing away there names and for the sport. WHY?

Maybe its just time but i havent seen a surfer here doing that in CT yet. This place is so amazing and nice and blessed with some sick breaks and waves... but no we cant just go and enjoy it and leave.. we have to break something, litter all over the show etc etc..

Dont know if other people see this but you are destroying the name of Bodyboarding and our awesome beaches... GROW UP!!

    God Bless
    MC

I have to agree with you about the state of our beaches - they are a mess.

I can't say that this is due to Boogers or any other beach users, but surely we should all only leave behind our footprints.

I haven't personally seen people leaving their trash on the beach, but often find booze bottles, condoms and other dirt left by revelers the night before.

It's tough to deal with becasue something such as littering is all down to the morals of an individual and what responsibility they are willing to take for their actions.

I'm not perfect and to say that i have never littered would be a lie, but i do try my best to leave nature the way i found it - hopefully untouched.

I live up the West Coast and if i take a walk on the beaches i'm shocked by the number of cooldrink bottles that wash up.

Now what can be done about it?

Well i know for a fact that there is money to be made in garbage.

I work for a company that recycles cooldrink bottles (P.E.T), we re-use these bottles to make fibre(polyester)...weird i know cooldrink bottles into stuff they make clothes with, but it's true!
Another important thing we do is help with the manufacturing of cheap insulation for low cost housing...

Anyway to cut a long story short what i suggest is a Beach Clean Up Project over the Cape Peninsula.
Bottles and other waste could be collected and sold/donated to recycling companies.

Funds raised could go towards promoting Bodyboarding in disadvantaged communities...by doing this we could raise awareness amoungst the youth and remind them that cleaning up after themselves will only benefit them in the long run.

Get the Province and Boland Teams involved and lets try and Keep the Cape in Shape.

yea i havent been home in a while but i've been emailed pics by mates of north beach and ballito my two fav spots and well i suppose North is different cause hundreds of people use it, but even ballito was looking a little shoddy, come guys we dont want to end up like the US where when the rain comes the water turns toxic just from the litter...

Hugh, your irreverent attitude is funny sometimes. But bru, there is absolutely no point to writing what you just did. Maybe it's a joke I am not getting but what I do know is that many ous who DO litter hold a similar attitude to the one you have displayed here.

Beach cleanups are a solid idea. When and where? Lets get it going!

It seems to me that the attitude some boogers have in the water is leaking onto the beach wich results in littering. I find more surfers greeting me in the water than boogers and the surfers are the guys with the supposedly bad attitude towards bodyboarders. Maybe we should start working on our attitudes as bodyboarders and respect ourselves, nature and our wonderful sport... This will be a big step toward cleaner beaches and more fun sessions...

    Peace

It's all about taking RESPONSIBILITY......When I go to my 3 local spots, I like saying "THIS IS MY HOUSE" and I surf like I own it, but not cause I surf like a pro, but cause I'm taking a certain amount of RESPONSIBILTIY for those spots......I ALWAYS look for broken glass and then bin it.....if there is trash around my parking spot I throw it away....as far as I'm concerned if you call yourself a local....then prove it. Loads of guys can paddle out and rip, they're a dime-a-dosen.....But only a handfull of us can say at a surf spot, "THIS IS MY HOUSE"....Keep it clean or get lost....

What you say is true Chinnychinchin...

I think we surf the same locals and yeah it is about doing your bit to try and keep the place tidy...

Keep doing what you are doing...

    Peace.

Something that i hear from the provincial comittee is team building events, well what about say half a morning cleaning up a local beach and then the other half in the water or something? Not to sure who is on the committees here but anyone that can pick this up and take it to the committee as an idea? Might sound lame.. but yeah just a thought hey...
