Localism

Ok for some stange reason the comments is getting more traffic than the forum, so i am going to try move this over into the forum.

Peter.. i too have moved away, i am now living up on the west coast in Parklands and have had to start surfing the local spots here more and more because it costs and arm and a leg to drive to Kbay. But rest assured when the swell hits and i can find a way to get out of work i will be out at the reef, battling it out with the rest of the 100000000000000000 locals. All this started with some little howlee chirping kuk about some other little howlee and then some other little howlee chirping back, all school kids, and all claiming local status. Oh and then some other little howlee asking for directions to a spot that shouldnt even be named or listed on this site..grrr grrr grrr... hence the razorblades chirp.

Its humbling to start surifng a new spot, been hitting allot of Derde steen, tube wave and cnr/sharkbay. The whole vibe is different, i am a nobody, no one here care that i have clocked up over 15+yrs at kbay, none of them even surf kbay, basicaly i am just another matt in the lineup, the surfers are, well... surfers, same as any other spot agro and full of ego. But i am making an effort to.. well follow what peter lambert said.. put the hours into the water, make friends on the beach and in the water, show uber ammounts of respect to all who are out, dont drop in, and when dropped in on, try maintain my temper and not throw a fit about it. Reality is i never see the main boogers out (ok other than Jared Housten and his crew) I surf with the old school every now and again (bobby scott, brett simpson and steve polinsky) but thats about it. Its gonna take a few years to get into it, but its all good. Next time you up this side give me a call and we can go score some sandy barrels.

In my original post i did state that we are all locals of the peninsula, the minute we can drive we surf where ever its offshore, be it the reserve, shlong beach, hoek, llands, west coast or false bay, its just a reality and thats what seperates us from say the rest of the country.... Our local spot is huge and not limited to one break. and we drive way too much and dont surf enough... hahhahaha
    Peace and respect.

I think there is waaaay too much time and effort going into a debate that quite clearly will never end.

Yes there is always going to be agression in the water from locals and "locals" too.

Yes there is going to be a time when the kids start growing up and start looking for respect (ie: the bay)

Yes there are going to be some older guys getting annoyed and vengeful. (I know i probably will when i come home in Feb)

Yes there will always be annoying young kids in the water (I used to be one) and there will always be annoying older guys in the water moaning about the younger guys(I am one now).

We all just have to deal with it and realise that it's never really going to end.

Oh well. Peace hommies, there are bigger things in the world to worry about... Like the price of petrol and niknaks

    HO$H

Well just to add 5 cents...
Living in town and mostly surfing Llans for many consecutive years I honestly thought all stand-ups were arrogant mofos and that some of the spongers that dominated Gat were not much better but I recently have experienced a revelation! As Peter L says - respect (giving and receiving). There's a very well known and cranking spot that I only recently braved cos I heard the locals didn't care much for anybody else surfing there (I won't name it for fear of ruining what I found). The locals, both boogers and stand-ups have been super cool, friendly - in fact a pleasure to be in the water with and while there may be a bit of jockeying in the lineup to get the bombs it's only a case of 'he who goes hard gets pitted', no drop ins, no bitchin.

Yeah Spy, we're all locals of the Peninsula and damn fortunate at that so to all those that I've had the pleasure of trading waves with - Big Up! Shot for the fun times!

Beam me down Scotty I'm going surfing!
