hey guys how ya going. I'm Simon im from Australia and me and my mates are coming to south africa this christmas holidays for 6 weeks. I cant freaking wait should be shitloads of fun. I was wondering if anyone could help us out. we will be bodyboarding but will be spending more time skimboarding i was wondering if anyone could tell me where the heaviest and most stupidly big shorebreak is that is reachable with a skimboard.
were gonna be in plettenberg bay for about 3 weeks over new years i heard there is a place called the wedge?? are there any stupidly big shoreys around the plett area? any anything that we can drive to?
thanks heaps guys
simon
Hey,as far as plett goes the wedge is a mental wave but although it breaks close to shore it's not really what you'd call a shorebreak-but with certain banks I suppose it could be good for skimboarding-if there's a big swell the wave in the middle of the beach by wedge can get a very good shorey though.Unfortunetly during that time of year big swells aren't that common around there because the bay is quite sheltered and needs a big powerful winter groundswell.
You'll find good shorebreaks all around the north and south coasts of Kwa-Zulu Natal, especially in summer-there's a spot in Zinkwazi-north of Durban called Jamie's Beach where I've surfed mental shorey's,but it might be a bit hard for someone who doesn't know the area well to find it.
As far as cape town and the western cape goes I can't tell you too much,so you'll have to wait for a reply from one of the guys from down there, but I know Dias beach in CT has probably one of the best shorey's in the country.
Try search for some pics of some of these spots on this site to get an idea of what to expect.

hey i'm also gonna be in plett over new years! pretty amped! the north coast of KZN, gets some mad shorebreak in the arvie during spring tides! dunno bout skimboarding though cause most of it sucks all the water right off the drop off and you end up airdropping onto pretty much no water! damn i love that feeling

thanks heaps JdV and puku !! if anyone else knows anything about any spots in south africa we will drive anywhere !!
puku thats awesome if it sucks up all the water.. thats what we wants as skimboarders, little to no water before the wave ! are the spots on the north coast of KZN easily found or do we need some local knowledge..
you will probably see us this new years skimboarding. Ill be on a bright green skimboard if you see us come and say g'day !

I don't know if anyone out there can back me up on this but there's a spot near Stilbaai called Kakgat, (I think the name says it all) it's one hell of a shorey. It's quite easy to find from Plett. You drive in Cape Town's direction with the N2, take the Stilbaai offramp which will come 2 to 3 hours later and then the Jongensfontein road wich is about a 8km drive, Just ask anyone around there where the beach is where a couple af people have drowned over the past few years and they wil be glad to show you the way...

ohh thats sounds awesome dude. but when you say shorey do you mean a shorey for a bodyboarder or a skimmer. cos skimmers look for shoreys that are directly on the sand or just a little bit out. sometimes there is a bit of confusion with a shorey for a booger then can be a fair while out and a shorey for a skimmer
but that place sounds sick dude thanks heaps.
