RETIRED PRO'S.....

After reading the inspiring artical on Mike Stewart.....I have a question.....In standup surfing, huge respect is lavishly dished out to the retired pro's and pioneers of surfing, you still see their pics in mags, you read their comments, you still hear about them, they are given a special place in the history of surfing. Our retired pro's, well you NEVER see or hear about them in publications, anywhere. I think it's very sad. There was a pic of Kieth Sasaki doing a cuttie on the knee, in the Toys artical....OH MY HAT! I have never seen a DK cuttie like that ever, pure rail-warping power! Now if these guys are still riding why don't the photog's give them any film-time? Hero's......pioneers....ledgends.....like, Jack Lindholm, Ben Severson, Kieth Sasaki, Kevin Okumura, Pat Caldwell Jay Real, J.P. Paterson and many, many more. What happens to all the pro's....is the spot-light of our sport so limited that there is just not enough space? Are these guys forced to get "REAL" jobs and stop surfing?Who out there knows?

i think its a little like us ballies bru, we grew up, got jobs, got promoted, got retrenched, got new jobs, started our own businesses, got a girlfriend, got a wife, kids, reponsiblities, morgage bonds, car repayments.
Maybe they even end up as the ulitmate weekend warriors, old enough not to get pissed on a friday night and up with the sparrows fart saturday morning, cruising for waves before having to get home at 10am to take the lighty to rugby or something like that, maybe squeesing in a late arvi surf when the wife goes shopping or something... i get to surf for a few hours each week, 1 day of the weekend is mine but in reality only a few hours are spared for the ocean, sad realy but in the end it makes you appreciate ever second, no matter how kuk the conditions are.
    Sux getting old.

Ya Spy I know what you're saying bro! When there's waves on the weekend, the lawn just don't get mowed....ha ha ha
You made me think of the Movement Mag saga.....is there no real cash to be made, to pay the bills? So the kings and ledgends of our sport have to find crappy desk jobs? They were so busy making our sport as epic as it is that they were'nt building a career......It's very sad...I suppose the big surf lables will still pay the old standups to ride....where as our pro's never got any "real" support from them anyways, so why would they support them now......what can be said?....SUPPORT COMPANIES THAT SUPPORT BODYBOARDING!

There's an article on Ben Severson in Movement ... a regular like this would be a great feature in all magazines.

As for content on sixty40 - Sean Tickner has recently joined as a contributor and I have a few submissions to put up ... but going forward, we'll keep this in mind and try get some news on these guys.

Also - for any one amped on a bit of bodyboarding history ... Tom Boyle has just released his Bodyboarder's Video Magazine 3-in-1 DVD and it is available in South Africa now ... a bit of a collectors item for the old school crew for sure.
