Dungeons Yesterday

  • Spy Dude
    July 2006
Got this from spikes posting on the wavescape forum board.

According to Greg Long and Twiggy Baker, backed by some of the local tow crew, Dungeons was the biggest it has ever been yesterday, with legitimate 30-50 foot waves being towed into. One wave, which rumour has it will easily take the XXL this year, had a wave face of 70 feet.

The ous are blabbering incoherently about this one. A couple of guys, including Mavericks charger Grant Washburn, tried to paddle it and all are relieved to be alive today. Another opinion is that these are some of the largest waves ever ridden, if not the largest, beating Mike Parsons 66' wave face at Cortes Bank.

Aaaah man, saw that Riptide in Indo, our Ozzie mate Arab had it..
    Rawlins is NUTS.
How many of those waves is he airborne on? There's like 2 waves/shots in the whole feature where he's actually in contact with the wave otherwise he's just skipping through massive barrels or down even more massive faces... If anyone had reason to think about doubting Rawlins as one of the worlds top riders they've got no hope now...

These are the first images to emmerge on the net of Sundays session at dungeons.
Given taken by a real ametur photo with a little instamatic camera in driving rain and cloud, you cant expect much, but its enough to make your heart skip a beat or two....

 Ok, I must admit I was a bit sceptical when I first heard about how big it was, thought there would've been something on the news but after seeing those Pics, even though they aren't too good, it looks freakin big!
Hope Durban get some of that swell!

because of the XXL awards the photos are keeping very quiet about it, grant washburn put something up on surfline about it, but its been overshadowed by the chopes swell (friday chopes was 20ft)

Spike posted this late yesterday afternoon on the wavescape forum...

"I have spoken to Twiggy, Grant Washburn, Nico, Simon, and they are totally awestruck by their experiences yesterday (Sunday afternoon).

Grant calls it 35 feet, but the others say that's conservative, with individual waves in the 40-50' range. They all concur that the biggest wave was probably ridden by Greg Long and it had a wave face of at least 70 feet, if not more. They're looking at the pictures today. Greg said that they were the biggest waves he has ever ridden, including Jaws, Mavs etc.

Simon says they were the biggest waves of his life, and most of them were 10 times over his head (that's 6' 6" x 10 = 70 feet)

I just spoke to a guy who was at Dungeons shooting Twiggy, Greg Long, Simon and the boys towing in. There were two guys, one a pommie photographer who took digi and this guy, who shot on film, black and white as far as i know.

Any way, he is holding onto his pics and refuses to let me have any. He also does not want to sell any to local or even national media until his 'scoop' has scored the big bucks overseas. I suppose they're going for the Surfer and Surfing mags of the world.

Leaves a bitter taste that the lure of the dollar and the bright lights, big city, fame and fortune takes preference over your own community - sad that a bunch of seppos who will think Dungeons is a small gothic town near San Diego get to see OUR spot before US - but I guess this is the break he's been looking for, and it's the advice he has been given by other photogs. you see, maybe if the SOUTH AFRICAN magazines showed a little interest in local photographers they will be willing to part with their work here, but if i was in this guys position i would also sell overseas first and then maybe consider the local mags... if the grovel and lick my feet hard enough.
Can say from all the photogds i have spoken too, withthe exception of AVG and Bazza, most are very dissalusioned with the south african surf media as a whole..

Speaking of Dungeons. Has anyone seen windguru and the predicted swell for next Wednesday. Where can any sane person surf with a swell that size?

    Hey Spy Dude,

I spoke to a mate today that was one of the tow crews out there on Sunday. All rumours are true, Greg Longs 70ft wave, Mike Schlebach's 30ft barrel, 2 wave hold-downs... scary shit.

Regarding the mag/photo story, turns out that 'Zag had commissioned a photo story of the friday's waves already before they heard of the sunday madness, guess they used up their budget or something... hahaha.

Anyway, the point should be that our local guys are staking their own claim in the XXL Gonad kingdom, and that frickin rocks! Anyone got a spare jetski lying around???
