Growth & Progression

I was glad to walk in on the HB/ Badboy contest at the wavehouse on Sat afternoon, but a bit let down at the turn out.
Maybe I only got the end of it?

Anyway what I did notice is the lack of Groms?... and family vibe.
And more importantly lack of spectators (at least 20+).
However let me quickly steer away from these facts!

Luckily what I saw was awesome! Guys busting out, weird new moves by Billy and great DVD preview by the Jucksta & CO, and Mr Schafer filming the boys.

Anyway I just want to put out a few questions-
Are school contests a thing of the past?
Cos thats how i got into it.
    Is the bodyboarding industry fragmented?
Seems like the heart of BBing was once in Durbs & now it lies in Cape Town, which is not bad at all.
But what happened in durbs & what we are going to do to prevent it again?

The main reason I pose these Q's is that what the guys did at the wavehouse (in the context of where we live- 3rd world country & amount of support in the Industry) was awesome!
But ALOT of guys missed out and the message and what the pros do doesn't seem to reach further than the guys already part of the Bodyboarding community.
    :?:
Thus what are we doing to get new comers?

4 sure! Credit to the guys who ran the contest - I received the article which from ST and I wanted to be there!!! So go have read ... and then next time we'll get the guys to advertise well in advance (this was a problem here) and get the guys to the Wavehouse to support it ... sounded like a good day out for sure.

I will say one thing - sometimes it is not always about the numbers of guys at the event but more the number of guys that the coverage gets out to: spectators, print, web and video coverage. Take test match cricket for example - the stadiums are empty but thousands tune into watch the game, if not the highlights.

I look forward to the next event!

Bodyboarding industry being fragmented - short answer yes. Funny you have brought this up because I have been looking at this and will be trying to work on a way to help rectify it ... I think there is a common goal which we can all work towards which will help.

Schools bodyboarding - in WP the schools programme is strong. KZN used to have a great inter-schools contest back in the day. Would love to see this up and running again - what we need first is a just some small inter-school contests first. If you or anyone you know are keen to get on the programme and help fire these up then get hold of your province.
