Just posted the official report from the start of day 1.
For something a little less official, I had a quick word with my brother Derek. As at 10:45 it looks like they should be through round one. 2 rounds are being surfed in the Shark Island format - your top two rides from each heat are counted against all other riders.
Wave of the contest so far definitely goes to Al 'the wave magnet' Taylor himself with a sick barrel into a big roll off the close-out. Back on his home turf, he is definitely going to be the man to beat.
The guys are getting some good shots and will be uploading them a bit later from the beach.
I unfortunately can't keep on the case today so anyone who has any news on the contest - feel free to post it against this so that we can keep the guys a bit up to date.

Last heat is in the water at the moment.
Apparantly Sacha Specker killed round 1 and is in the water at the moment. Wesley Fischer is following up his good form of late with some big flips and Darren Halse & Neil Smith were two others who had good heats. Inacio "Naartjie" Serrao apparently just busted a huge smooth reverse air in the final heat. (Darren's calling it Naartjie's biggest move ever!)
So - should be finishing up soon. Release will be out by this evening with photos from the event following shortly afterwards I imagine. Unfortunately they can't upload from the event but will be uploaded this evening.

Just a quick note to say thanks to everyone that made this event possible, Movement mag especially, also 662Mob, Wavescape and sixty40, and of course the competitors and judges and officials.
Photos will be posted within the next 48 hours, a lot of the photogs had to bail for margate after the event, so I'll be meeting some there tomorrow to get some shots for everyone to see. In the meantime posting an empty wave shot from Sacha Taljaard that gives you an idea of how good the waves were.
