what the hell is wrong with surfers?

    Ahoy,

This morning i was surfing llans (2ft and crap) and had been taking off on these wedges by the shorebreak. I was there for like 2 hours and freaking out about the crowds... so craig paddles in and im left all by meself..

The waves start getting remotely better by Gat so I paddle on the inside next to a surfer...

Then he says somthing like "bla bla bla on the inside and ill burn you" just like completely out of the blue. So i just stare at him then he replies "do u understand english? So i say ya why whats your problem? THen he rambles on about how rude it is paddling on the inside and says "you must wait your turn". Its just me and him why the hell must I wait my turn? Then he makes me lose it: "look, since you started life out on one of those (my custom rossi, yeyeye) Ill forgive you about not knowing the rules..." Im like what the f*ck I wanna play by the rules Id go and play rugby with the jocks and so I say "listen I dont wanna hear about this, you think you come off a flipping high-horse cos your're riding a huge elephant gun in 2ft slop, whatever mate..." and I paddle away while hes shouting "hey dont be a kid! bla bla bla blaaaaa..."

So im lank pissed that this doos ruined my day and now Im asking anyone for their advice on surf rage?

    Cheers

If you paddle around then you are going to get tuned, dropped in on or you're inviting a bit of a slap. And if you've had someone paddle around you then you probably wanted to dish out all three.

Basically, those are part of the rules of the line-up - if you break them then you are going to cause a bit of friction in the water.

If you're paddling quite a bit past the guy then it shouldn't have been an issue if you're going to ride a different peak or he's only good enough to take off on the shoulder but if you're paddling past to take off just deeper than him then either wait for him to catch his wave before moving deeper or just tell him you're going deeper and that he should shout on the next one if he wants it. After he's had his wave then priority would have gone to you.

My advice - paddling straight out onto the inside is not going to make you any friends. Rather wait your turn till you're on the inside and then you can paddle as deep as you want.

From your post you seem to reckon that you bodyboard because you don't want to play by the rules --- there are rules everywhere bru and if you don't want to play by them then you are going to invite confrontation - so if you can't handle the confrontation then play by the rules --- you can't have it both ways.

Just basically - realise that there are rules in the water (for a very good reason) and try not be the guy that causes the friction out in the water by blatantly breaking them - this guy obviously was stressed by you paddling onto his inside and in my opinion he was rightly so - especially if there are only two of you in the water. I'd be going "are you kidding me?" - with only two out it's not like you were fighting for waves.

Well, that's how I read it ... doesn't matter what the other guy was riding - sounds like he was in the right. So, please don't make it into a bodyboarder vs surfer issue when it is clearly not, if anything you have just given him further reason to tune bodyboarders.

One thing I noticed was ouens tuning you if you get lots of waves and paddle past, but they're not sitting in the line-up, only way down the wave. If you're sitting in the line close to the peak you'll get waves, if you've got a local friend. I've always had respect for Llans locals, some are pricks (not bboarders, some surfers) and some are bbing friends.

Yet, if I'm not local and I get some burning, I'll take it like a man. At my local spot I paddle past, I've surfed there for almost 18 years. It's the same with locals anywhere else and in time you'll also have respect. I won't tune anyone initially, but I'll burn 'em if I feel they've snaked me and I'll tell them that in their face. I ride surfers off their boards if they burn me, I have no quibbles, but I know when I deserve it (allthough I seldom get in these situations since I know the rulz).

Moral is respect the older surfers/bboarders, stick to the rulz.

snake and drop in, thats how to be cool. (you feel really hardcore when you drop in on sum1 while riding a pool noodle) respect no1 and every1 will bow down in submission 2 u. (remember to always drool and scream at the birds flying overhead otherwise you may have sum problems with aggro locals)

If you're paddling out and a wave comes through with someone on it, its generally good surf etiquette to rather paddle toward the foamie part of the wave than the open face and risk messing up the persons wave. Unless of course its 10 ft, then courteousness goes right out the window

I concur with Jared, paddle towards the breaking part of the wave if you're paddling back out.
Nothing better than dodging boards at crowded North Beach when you finally get a wave!
BIG Plus-Learn to duckdive! (Throwing your board in the way as you try swim for the sea floor is NOT duckdiving)
