howzit kimon,
The Slab is a helluva heavy reefbreak near dungeons.when the swell isnt working right at dungeons the swell rolls further in onto a slab of reef, hence The Slab. big heavy hollow beautiful.looks like something out of western australia.suited perfectly for bodyboarders.surfers would never be able to make the drop let alone ride it without a jet ski to tow them bitches in.sweet.ian or some1 correct me if im wrong

August 2005
yup thats about right.
If you standing on the top of the sentinal looking down on the dundeons area..theres an outcrop of rocks on the inside right. the Slab breaks near it.
Dungeons reef is futher out to the left..in deeper water...so when the swells small it misses dungeons and focuses HEAVIELY on the Slab!!
the one BIG problem is that you can not really paddle out there..u can but you going to have to paddle right next to "seal island" mmmm..shark possibilities are HUGE!!
It will be Ridden though!!

JmoAugust 2005Hey Puku,
We have been checking it to suss the conditions, but the place is pretty freaky. The take off section looks awesome, thick and heavy, but there is a second section that unpredictably closes out on some waves... this is what you don't see in the still images taken from the water. There is no deep channel like at dungeons, and the spot is super exposed and gets lumpy very easily. So it is a matter of finding the right conditions... and the right wave.
Ian has pointed out the Seal Island factor: paddling a few hundred metres out past that rock would be like taking a 30 minute stroll through Hillbrow at night with your new Nike threads!!
We'll get it sometime, and if we can find connections to hook up water support (boat/jetski) then i say its definitely game on!

Thats a joke hey? Just coz you cant race a boogie board, jealousy ensues. And I know that you cant weave on a bodyboard. And that Teahupoo is so fast that when you pull in, you might be going so fast that your feet have got some sun, and your head is totally covered. Without holding your rail, its fucking hardcore. Paul Roach et al excluded, I have seen some boog movies and, of course, I have seen boogs in life. I visit your website often because Im not a hater. But I know that on a bodyboard you can only go as fast as the wave. Im sure Im wrong and please correct me if I am, but all I seem to see are DK boys riding the whole wave(unless they get barreled, and getting barreled is always cool) doing nothing except waiting for the end section and hitting that. At 20-25 feet its badass. You should know better.

I dont like surfers
KellyAugust 2005Misfit! Shot for your post bru and good to see a few guys from the dark side visiting the site! Jokes man - seriously, if we accomplish anything with the site it would be to help bring an end to the surfer/bodyboarder wars. I have a brother who surfs another who both surfs and bodyboards and a mix of friends who do either and it is such a joke when you end up somewhere where you have to deal with these issues.
Puku - I think the point is, and Misfit eluded to it ... there are some guys who can ride and some who can't. Some surfers can ride Teahupoo and some can't, some bodyboarders can DK and some can't ... some waves are suited to bodyboarding and some are suited to surfing ... Supertubes J-Bay - arguably the best point break in the world but hardly a world class bodyboarding wave and I'd love to see a bodyboarder who can tear it apart on par with the surfer crew. I haven't seen the 'zag DVD but it could be lame and your comments would be warranted, however, how does that lead you onto "surfers are so lame"? It would be like a surfer watching you spinning your way to the beach at 2 foot North Beach and then claiming "bodyboarders are so lame"! Kainoa McGee has gained heaps of respect for getting up on the knee at Teahupoo - but what did he do that these surfers weren't? So is DK lame? Some may think - everyone is entitled to their opinion BUT before voicing your opinion, just ask yourself if you have a valid point.
My point is - take a look at the two sports. Over the years each of them has pushed each other and learnt something from the other - in the early years it was always going to be that the bodyboarders looked to surfing for inspiration but following the popularity of bodyboarding in the late 80's/early 90's, surfing had to almost re-invent itself and look to other sports such as bodyboarding, skate and snowboarding for the new school moves which has brought back its popularity. When I started bodyboarding - 16 years ago - videos were hard to come by and guys who could DK were few and far between so for me I spent hours watching surf videos rather than bodyboarding videos and would try compete in the water with the surfers. Again, the point - as lame as you think surfing may be, if you don't look to surfing, skateboarding or snowboarding for inspiration then you will just be one of the guys who is always following the pack rather than innovating.
The DVD might be lame, a few surfers might be lame but surfing is not lame bru! If you want to get into specifics then go ahead but generalisation is the one main enemy of bodyboarding - sponging is accessible to almost everyone - young kids to grannies and granddads but just because watching them sponge is lame, we wouldn't want bodyboarding to be classified as lame would we?
For me, I've travelled on trips where I've been the token bodyboarder and last year did another Indo boat trip where we took along a token surfer and the friendly banter is probably what made those trips so memorable.
It's hard to pick up someone's views in a few words on a forum so I'm not having a go but rather putting forward my view - most of us bodyboard/surf as a sport or hobby, basically to enjoy ourselves and there is nothing better than paddling out with a bunch of mates or strangers when there is a good vibe in the water (and hopefully good surf) - no matter what anyone is riding - however, it only takes one person to turn the mood in the water ... just make sure that person isn't you!

This water fascism – no matter who starts it – is so inconsequential. A shame most waterborne kids in SA today seemingly have it so easy; and have been shrouded in conditions which are not conducive to tolerance, something their elders fought so hard for….
Kudos to those who are going to surf the Slab, theirs is they way, trailblazing with little fanfare…
JmoAugust 2005Well there we go... I figured it was only a matter of time before we found someone that had surfed it already. All the more motivation to hit it...

sorry but i think the new zag dvd (that is free) fugging rocks.
I grew up when there were few bodyboarder and many surfers, we earned our repect from them and albet a few jibes and jokes i get on with most surfers.
I am sorry Chopes is real heavy, and that movie provides a good insight into what it looks liek in various conditions. Its now the 5th chopes movie that i own as one thing i do before i die is to ride that wave.
to the dude that dissed the DVD, get over your racism bru, because currently you are no different to the zag ed (jarvi) who is liek eugene terblanch (although after a bit of jail time i think he reformed a bit) Jarvi carries on propergating the hatred for boogers and thus at the end of the day comes out looking like an old school , old south african dickhead. dont sink to his level.

last week a few hardcore boogers rode one of the capes big wave spots... the crayfish factory.... on a solid 10 -12ft swell.
Aadam grant is in a leauge of his own... wait for lines of fire to see what i am talking about, and Danielle (sorry dont know her surname) is gonna be the next big thing in international womans bodyboarding, yup she was also charging the factory, its been along time since a little bit of footage got me jumping around in my seat.

listen ous im sorry if i offended some 1 but that was my opinion.i wasnt meant to generalise like that,i was meaning the dvd was lame (my opinion).dont get me wrong,i got alot of surfer friends and some of my family are surfers and we get on well.Teahupoo is a awesome, heavy wave but i honestly think that surfers can do better than that (get deeper in the barrel etc.).but im honestly sorry to whoever i offended and if i can change that in anyway let me now and i'l try my best to undo the wrong.oh and im glad to here sum1 has ridden The Slab

I saw that movie at the London premeire of Fair Bits, of which Jack McCoy was the MC. Him being the world's foremost underwater cinematographer. He said it was the heaviest thing he had ever witnessed. I didnt get offended, its just poor that you chose to air insults in a cozy environment where you probably thought your opinion would get rated, instead you got berated. I dont think you would charge there DK without holding your rail.

um puku, i totally agree that you are entitled to your opinion, but bru, what you say is utter rubbish, watch that movie again.
Day 1: seriously big chopes, And i am sorry shane dorian gets deeper than anyone ever has before in those condiitons. Day 2 is smaller and more perfect. Andy irons gets some seriously sick deep pits, so does bruce.
Then there is the jetski incident.
Also the previews are mindblowing, how mad is the shipsterns movie, (i have 2 booger divx shipsterns movies and well nothing compares to that aussies final tube. Then also watch the preview for the billabong pro... dude how mad is slaters barrel where he lays back on the bottom turn.
Fuck bru i have seen some lame movies in my time, but that free DVD on the zag definatly isnt one of them.
Quality waves, hot editing, great use of angles (especially the helicopter in the remixes) and wicked music.
You dont like it just cos its got surfers? I dont get it. Are we watching the same movie? cos the one i got those ous get fucking deep, saddly deeper than any booger ever will at chopes.
There is a time and place for everything, Jbay is for surfers, plett wedge is for boogers, dungeons... yeah well i skim its a surfers wave, kalk bay at low tide = boogers, high tide = surfers. Share and share alike, respct all and try to have fun, cos end of the day, thats why you bodyboard... isnt it?

hold on spy dude.not once did i say i dont dig surfers.i actually said that i get on well with all the surfers that i know.but you get asshole surfers, just as you get asshole bodyboarders.you get assholes in every sport that exsists.so thats not the reason why i DIDNT dig the dvd
back to the dvd.i watched it again this weekend(as mentioned in a previous post,i'm at boarding school,so i only go home on weekends)im sorry.it was my mistake.last time i watched it i didnt really study it and i didnt watch the extras.the dudes where cruising through the barrel and their feet where in the sunlight, but they where actually deep in the barrel.i went over it in more detail and realised i was in the wrong.well we all make mistakes.shipsterns is such a scary wave and it must be faarking hard to ride it,especially on a surfboard.teahupoo sucks so hard off the reef.in one of the extras a surfer goes over the falls so quickly and he comes flying out the tube back flipping and stuff.whoah.dudes get deep tubes in that extra section.sorry for the inconvenience ous,my bad.oh and please dont put me on the same level as jarvi, cause im trying hard not to sink that far down.
