    Hey bru,

i shoot with a Nikon D40x - the model before the D60. both great slr's as is the Canon. the only problem i have encountered with my nikon is frame bursts ie shooting a sequence. the nikon is limited versus the canon being able to do up to 60 or something ridiculous. it has helped me with my timing though cos i have to get the move, i cant just bang off a whole bunch of shots and hope i got at least one good frame.

there is another slr that is getting rave reviews at the moment and thats the sonly alpha - the 350 is on par with the canon you mentioned and i would suggest you have a "play" with it in the shop and get some opinion on it.

the other downfall with nikon is equipment costs - generally speaking if you are going to use nikon lenses, you are going to pay much more than you would for either the canon or the sony stuff.

hmmm good questions, both good slr's.

i prefer my canon for many reasons etc and they are also the only makes that do a full 35mm frame which can be sick later on if you can afford it....450D is sweet startup, if you can jump straight onto the 40D?

the camera bodies are the cheapest part, so beware ;) then again thats the enjoyment of saving and getting new lens etc.! Only until recently ive been shooting with the canon 350D which has been very limiting to 3 frames per second, so timing is crucial and cant just fire off a million shots, now ive upgraded i can fire off a million shots but not sure if im super keen on that either as anyone can just do that and you can still miss out on that crucial split second...either way start off small and with those bodies you cant go wrong, 8MP and up is a good start and plenty good enough quality for mags and posters!

cool good luck and let us know how you go... check out the following for good prices while you are out there...

    Ahoy.

I'm in the UK at the mo and got myself a Canon G9. It's not an SLR but its about as good as compacts come. It has a full manual mode, stabilised 6x zoom lense and shoots RAW format photogs which allows for higher quality and superior editing options. I chose it over a full SLR cos there's a sweet Canon underwater housing for it. I got the cam for £300 and the underwater housing for £150 at Ask on Tottencourt Rd in London, really helpful guys and best deal I could find. There is also a wide angle and teleconverter lense (x12 zoom=approx 400mm SLR lense, correct me if I'm wrong) available, however neither are compatible with the housing. So while its a bit limited in the lense department, it's way cheaper to get it in the water, SLR housings will cost you more than the cam itself.

Also have a browse at Olympus, not as popular as the Canon or Nikon rigs but they do have underwater housings for a lot of their SLRs and the E520 is quite a sweet cam.

I attached a pic, it's from Kalk Bay in Feb. I'm really happy with the whole setup, its just annoying being in the UK and not being able to use it very often. Come December I'll be back in CT to use and abuse tho.

No worries hey, hope you come right!

I also bought the Canon G9 recently, I needed something decent for travelling around and general usage but didnt have the tom for a decent SLR.
The camera does have converters that you can add on, but they are soecific to the G9 and not SLR lenses. Pretty good camera all round and will definitely get you solid quality at affordable price, also with full manual settings if you want to learn about different photography techniques.

ok sick one nice, you will be stoked with that and good to get you started!

    short ciruit amy

well there are two options mainly, either buy a small instamtic point and shoot which is completely sealed and water proof but they are very limited in what they can do. You can also buy one one of those powershot camera and buy a casing for it with full control, but then also leaves you limited to lens etc yet more control then the instamtic. after that would be a normal DSLR camera which you can get custom housings made for the camera bodies and ports according to the lenses you use which are very pricey!

Instamtic - Cheapest and good for random fun, swimming, snorkeling, spashing around in the waves what not
sightly better model with housing - more control and better quality and functionality, more of the same features above
custom housing - good for all the above and much much more, from surfing to underwater shoots etc.

    hope this helps :)
