Just wanna know how many peeps have seen the Retrospect series of vids out there?
I watched series 2 the other day which has the DK story on it aswell.
Man was i blasted into the past with scenes of Pat Caldwell, Ben Severson, Maligs, Sasaki, Buder, young up and comin Aka & Roach and a whole host of others.

Im not gonna lie and say I didnt feel hell of a nostalgic my broo

I also just felt at the same time that this is the kinda thing EVERY young bodyboarder and grom out there should watch to see where the sport has come from cos to get to where your going, u need to know where u came from u know?
Guys like Stewart, Lindholm and the like didnt have anything to go by in the early days and their efforts & constant progressivness basically made bodyboarding the sooperfantastic sport it is today.

I dunno tune me if Im wrong but watching this vid just made me so proud of the sport and what its achieved in such a short time.
U see I grew up while the sport was still evolving alot sittin in all my buddies' lounges watchin the underground tapes gettin stoked.
That stoke got us all so amped we would hitch hike 30-40KM into Durban to get wet every weekend.

So if u aint seen the vids, do it ASAP and Im sure u will appreciate what every rider out there in the past has done for u and the sport directly and indirectly

As for me Ima get my boogy on till i cant no more

You're showing your age bru ... lol ... Underground Tapes - that was ages ago!!!

I have a bit of an interest in boogie history because it is something that has not been well documented in our sport and as you reckon, some good sources are the old school videos. An interesting one was last year's re-release of the Bodyboarders Video Magazine trilogy on DVD which were a bit of a documentary style video.

We got a few copies in at F7 and I had to have a bit of a nostalgia watch as soon as I got it - it was never distributed in SA originally and any copies which were running around were copies of copies of copies and no idea what happened to my copy. Anyway, was epic to watch again and really a bit of a shock at how far we have come - Mike Stewart doing hand-drag spins in 1988 - but what most interesting for me was to watch it a second time with the Director's Commentary on.

Would be great to see a few more of the old school videos re-released on DVD.

yeah....the triabl trial section is just classic....JP and Jay Reale basically taking the piss out of everyone (themselves included).......good times. How much do you want to surf 'pray for sex'? What is the modern day name for that spot?

Yeah broo it was so wierd for me when i started to boog again.
I went out when Roach and Skipp still rode for Manta!!!!!!
No friends hadnt even been around for long either :!:
Also i learned that Ben Player was world champ when i started again.!!!
Those okes only had their first surf at Pipe when i was peaking LOL!!!

So ja when i needed to get a new stick i was so frikkin confused wat with all the new brands out there.
Took me so long to take it all in and realise how much things had changed man.

But it was such good thing to see that the old skool peeps were still around, involved and even still standing out heavily at their local breaks.
Another thing that i was glad to see was that the community was still close, hell it even got a whole lot closer

But ja, i did start to see and show my age hehe....thanks Kelly 8)

I had the original Wave Warriors on Beta Max once, i got that video in 1986 (round abouts) It was all hawaii, all surfing except for this little section that showed these 3 kids playing on their boogieboards out at pipe, one was mike (doing the first roll ever captured on film) the other was Ben (getting a barrel whilst riding on mikes back) and the last was this hawaiian kid called Jack Lindholm, in this funny stance called drop knee, charging HUGE pipe. I think thats what opened my eyes to boogering, cos if i remeber correctly i started on a stand up board (local motion) and progressed to a bodyboard.

Just did a quick search to see what info was out there and according to Carol Phillips:
    Carol Phillips wrote:
... Jack Lindholm was the first to bodyboard at Pipe, and he did it dropknee.

I did not know that - respect! But I had read an interview which I was actually searching for where he relived his first session and if anyone has seen Jack bottom turning at Pipe then you may appreciate this.

Apparently, the guy scratched into a set and lay into a bottom turn as some surfer was paddling over the wave. He started describing how awe struck he was with the wave but then went back to the guy paddling over the wave who he reckons was just dumb struck watching this guy on a boogie doing something he had never seen before and almost got lipped in the process.

Anyway - the guy is a legend and you can check out his site ... pretty old and I am not sure he sells boards any more but there are some photos and scans of old surf & bodyboard mags and bit of a read.

    Sweet pg man!!!
Ja i hav a pic of Jack etched in my head of him bottom turning pipe at about 10ft and the only part of his board making contact with the water is the like a square inch of his tails corner!!!
Notice how far back he sat too, almost like he sat on his back foot

Saw that pic in like 96 and cant forget it

Jared, ur just saying that to make us feel better about our age arent u
HAhaha just kidding dood, im not that old anyways....only 28......and a half or so
I entered my first contest in January this year, and i started getting my boogy on in 93 when i was 12 8)
Different strokes for different folks innit?

Hey maybe we could even try scrape together a bunch of old flicks and have a screening somwhere or something?

    Rad.

Yeah those were the days, in the mid 80`s only a handfull of lads parents could afford to by them a Morey Boogie which had rainbow colours 1/3 of the way down the board, with two `Skegs`, I had to cut my teeth at North Beach on a Green 2nd hand Marshy that I bought for R15.00 second hand, not to mention the cronic belly rashes I got from it. At first we never used fins, then started using diving flippers until the more affordable WAP fins hit the market. Anyway here are some of the video titles I remember watching in the 80`s and early 90`s: The tribal trials, Winter on the Rock, Waves from Hell, Mutant Slabs and Monster Barrels, Contortion, Shockwaves. Some of the pilots in no order: Seamas Mercado, Kai Santos, Kainoa Mcgee, Jack "The Ripper" Lindholm, Danny Kim, Mike Stewart, Pat Caldwell, Ben Severson, Jay Reale, Haouli Reeves, Keith Sasaki, Ross Hawke, Lanson "RONK" Ronquilio, Alexandre DePontes (RIP), Stephen MacKenzie, Wingnut, Eppo and Aka Lyman.
Some of those names will only be recognised by the Last of the Old Skool, like myself!
    Enjoy!

That was around the time i started fading from the shark pheobia :(
I loved Contorsion so much I taped the soundtrack from the video LOL
I remember thinking that the one oke actually could have died cos i remember they showed something like a tombstone i think???
    Anyone remember that?

Oh and the one guy that got double bounced to the moon too hahahaha!!!
This thread has given me a few ideas.....hmmm yes i think i shall be implementing them soon...ish.
Just need a few good men

I still have an "original" pirate copy of "Contorsion" on VHS.....ha ha ha

Talking of Ronk I went into Replay Sports near Cavendish Square and they have a Morey Ronk and a Pro Comp BRAND NEW still in the plastic.....they also have a few pairs of retro fins like the green Churchills, the black and green Scott fins and even a pair of "Voit Duckfeet"....ha ha ha ha now theres a name not many will remeber.

Ja i was there not too long ago and saw those boards there too.
I actually rode one about a mmonth ago too and it went pretty good :D
It was the Ronk bat tail.
Also saw a Morey Avix i think it is, the one with Al Taylor busting on the pic on the deck.
Also still in plastic wrapping
Thing is that the guy still wants like a grand a piece for boards that r like 12 yrs old.
Yes they might be new but come now r u gonna buy a DVD player thats as big as a betamax machine and almost as old for the same price as one that is sooper slim and plays every format known to man?

I reckon if they were cheaper okes would take em just to have something that new from the old skool, maybe thats his angle?
I used to hav duckfeet back in the day too, they were rad.
Saw the green Churchills aswell and thought alot of guys would want them if they knew they were there
    The Scott's were very heavy.
A guy called Mark Lightly if i remember the name correctly had some for AGES.
He was good friends with Rossi back in the days of the Bay/Far Bowl crew.

    Good times.

'The Reef' section on underground tapes 2 was Suck Rock in Cronulla, I'm certain of that. Such a sick wave, but I never see images of it anymore...
And there was such a mental Waimea section in either Reef Madness or Ballistic with some super rad soundtrack to it... so amping.
Contortion was over edited with effects IMHO, but had that awesome section of the guys skimming inside the storm pipes right?
Oh, and Todd de Graaf swayed onto the dark side of the drugs scene if I remember correctly, big loss to the sport.

i remember the first video i saw was raw and the contest, my first actual video sighting of pipe, i was blown away, nothing could come close not even pictures ive seen of it to seeing the beast in action. those were the raw, hardly edited footage that made me feel like it was just one of us with a camera and his home made footage we managed to get hold of lol i remember hitch hiking with a mate to the beach, on the way back we got lost, ended up walking through a weddings reception with nothing but our bodyboards and wetsuits on, in the middle of town far from the beach, and my english teacher saw us and invited us to her house, we skipped that invitation really quickly.

man those were the days, grabbing ur board and fins, preparing for the long mission to the beach on foot, chatting bout the huge swell you gonna find there and imaging that was you surfing the waves you saw in those video tapes your mate brought over.

but thats why those vids stuck in our minds, because it was our first sightings of those particular breaks...popping our big wave cherry imagination lol
