Seeking board advice

    Howzit,

I’m thinking about taking up body boarding. There are an incredible amount of boards on the market – which to choose? So many different profiles, tail sections, rails etc. I used to body board (a little). I’m 6’ tall, and about 85kg. I will probably be prone most of the time but enjoyed drop knee too. I live in Cape Town.

I’m 10 weeks out of shoulder surgery and a sponsored whitewater kayaker. So after going out on Friday afternoon on a board, after watching the guys at Dungeons from a boat, I got pretty fired up. Seems my shoulder can take this. I reckon I’ll carry on body boarding even when I’m strong enough to paddle again. I don’t mind spending a little more on good equipment if need be. I was always keen on a Custom X board but could never afford one.

Any advice would be really great! Shot.

    Cheers,
    Adrian

    Adrian,
My guess is that you'll need to go for a 43 inch board and the rest is all pretty much personal preference. I personally think crescent tail boards are the all round best shape, and you could choose from any of the top brands and be well stoked with your decision; Science, NMD, Nomad, Custom X, they're all good. PE core boards work a bit better in the cold Cape Town water too.
Find a shop that stocks good gear and go ask some questions, in the south I'd recommend Sport Unlimited, and in the north I believe that Suntrax has pretty decent stock. Alternatively, if you know what you want then check out Factory7.co.za, the service from those guys is pretty awesome.

Good luck bud, and welcome back...

Thanks a lot Jmo. Appreciate that. Checking out a Custom X C4 (43") from Factory7, it's a 2007 so the price is looking good... I'll have a look around at the shops you mentioned too.

    Thanks again,
    Adrian :D

Dude...i have the perfect board for you!

A Nomad FSD Ultimate, 42.25 inches, PE Core, Crescent Tail.

Got the board a couple months ago from Factory 7, ridden it about 10 times (maybe more), so it is still in perfect condition - the reason i would like to sell it is because it is slightly too big for me. I am 5.7 foot tall and am used to riding a board no bigger than 42 inches so this one is just a touch too long for me but would be perfect for you!

I am willing to part with it for R1000 and will even throw in a spare used Nomad leash...

Not trying to steal business away from Factory 7 - i want to sell the board so that i can buy the smaller 41.5 inch Nomad FSD Ultimate from them - cos its a sick board.

Reply to this thread if you are interested.

    Cheers
    Gareth.

    Howzit Gareth,

    Is it this board?

    What colour is yours? :D

    Yeah thats the board...

    Colours...

Deck - Black (like the one in the pic)
    Rails - White
Slick - Dark Orange - pretty much Red.

Like i say...it's a sick board, just too big for me so i'd like to get the smaller one 41.5 inches.

I am going to send you a private message to give you my email address if you want to chat further...it's not cool leaving email addresses on the forum because the B0TS can pick them up and do dodgy things with them. So check your private messages next time you log on...if you look up at the top of your screen you will notice the blue banner with your private message box...plus you will be notified.

    Cool

    Chat later.

    Hi Derek,

No worries. Thanks for the offer, much appreciated. I have another mate who has bought two boards off of you already - seems your prices are always good. Congrats on a rad site, I really enjoy it! A mate and I have something very similar to your site - but no competition as its different products/market.

Thanks, shoulders are bad news things to injure. It has been 10 weeks to the day now. I reckon I'll only be back on the water (kayaking) around late October/maybe November. By then the rivers are dry... But at least the surf is there. I don't think I'll stop bodyboarding as the fitness is something else and a welcome relief off the shoulders. I also windsurf and that works the upper body damn well, especially wave sailing. The bodyboarding is going to be awesome.

I wouldn't wish injury on my worst enemy. Sitting at home is terrible. Death of the soul is worse than physical death itself:

Adrian... do you know Nikki Carstens and that mad hatter Charl Van Rensburg? The oke who boogies down rivers? Stab in the dark here.

PS Science, NMD or nomad are the way to go, i used to ride a cutom X and it has nothing on my new Science Tom Robbinson (the yellow one) uber sick board, also i was a bat tail man 100% and now have been converted back to cresents.

    Loving it! Support F7.

Thanks Len. You guys have been really helpful!!! I'm quite amazed as very often people are not very accomodating with regards to newbies...

Spy dude: I met both of them last week Friday night. (Had 'met' Charl over the internet as he wanted advice on one waterfall which I had run and a couple of other big ones.) They did a first night time descent down the Palmiet River. We didn't have time to send Charl an sms earlier that day otherwise he would have brought me a board too. We were busy with another mission on the river, involving my mate paddling me down on a sit-on-top kayak, pretty hectic.. This past Saturday I spent the day helping a mate of mine build a river board. Charl was there giving instructions. Great guy! I'm actually testing that board tmrw on the Breede River at some little spot - nothing serious. And don't tell my surgeon! hehehe. Small world ey?

Sounds good, I'm checking out Gareth's board tonight. :D

    Cool article Michelle, thanks. 8)

(lekker forum BTW) So good to see so many friendly and positive responses!
