only 22 votes is a shocker! is that how many people actually get involved in the site and the debates with disputes about pink guys in wings?

very true, arent there any sponsors this year or is this just a mockup? maybe the winner will get a noddy badge if no sponsors :)

    June 2008
yes Reef and Science are the product sponsors, we gave top of the range wetsuits (2 Ignitions R2299 each), TR science board (R1870-00) and hard case travel bag (R1600) as first prices and really nice 2nd, 3rd and 4th prices in each division. Sixty40 website can only put the logos on once SABA told him to, kelly is still waiting. he has put FNB and Robberg on for they gave money. on the T shirts the logos will be on the back and sleeves. imagin a photo of spy dude with wings, where did you get that photo? from your personal collection? viva spy dude

    June 2008
Guys - just to clarify. This was not a poster design. The previous two SABA comps purchased a Contest Coverage & Design package from sixty40 which we introduced this year to help improve contest branding which we believe will help with better quality exposure of the events, as well as bring in some revenue from our involvement with these events. For this event we have not been involved and no poster has been designed. From what I am told, there has been no budget set aside for design work for this comp so anything which is being done has been done as a favour - which I believe to be t-shirt and some graphics work for the entry form. This graphic is from the contest T-shirt and I was sent it when I asked if there was anything which would work for the event image which I either place with the contest logo or poster depending on what works. You can see the placement on the contest page:

    http://www.sixty40.co.za/wedgeclassic2008

Point being - there is no poster.
  • Spy Dude
    June 2008
no budget -- that is SWAK

Len, dude thats a pic of you in your younger days  when you were still a ruggabugga beefcake with wings and a nappie  Thank G you started bodyboarding and deflated a bit.... hahhaha

no seriously, All i had to do was google image search: Gay Pride with wings and there it is.... sad innit, kinda like that poster that isnt a poster but something else, um... ya kinda like THERE IS NO CRISIS IN ZIMBABWE! THE ANC YOUTH LEAGUE ARE FUN LOVING CRIMINALS

I was wondering where Spy got that image? Very disturbing  .

As for the "Poster" (which is not a poster)… thanks for a very entertaining thread, just too funny.

…the graphic is in fact used for the contestant T shirts, (as far as I know Reef/Science is helping out there). On a T-shirt the graphic is fine, I am not a fan of the obvious = bodyboarding + waves + frog-look-alike silhouette… as what seems to be the trend. Come now guys, get out of the box, or should I say the closet(lol)?

Sam that shirt is s sick bru!

    The homophobes can go without.
    Fair deal.

  • June 2008
I bet Spy has that as his wallpaper and on his phone also ;) why would you just know those certain things to search for... makes you wander sometimes...haha

cool stuff from Science and Reef for sponsoring the event, big ups to you guys!!

The shirt is cool in its own way hey, you cant make everyone happy and everyone has different taste. thats why normally the average joe -tshirt with a wave etc just goes well for everyone normally.

me personally i dont mind wearing pink but im not into emo either as im allowed to dance at shows and can wear mens clothing

mind you that owe is pretty solid and wouldnt mind that gay guy supporting bodyboading, will sort some of those surfers out! On that note actually wish we had more good surfers here in SA. Was at Kak Bay last night and so sooo many waves got screwed up by surfers trying to claim it and calls owes off, then you just see them bail, not take the drop, leave the wave etc etc. If you going to paddle out there and pretend you know how to surf then standup and surf... imagine the good spots in SA had the same lineups like the northshore....you mess up or chicken out you dont get anymore waves full stop ;) hahahaha...laters

  • June 2008

mark- ppshhhh, whatever bru, try using google images to find what you are looking for, its that easy.
    Jared - no name calling
    Sampi, it is disturbing

The pink wings thing works as a t-shirt, but not as a promo poster - that is just my opinion.

Yip, agreed... definitely doesn't work as a poster, fine as a T.

Not to be funny but things seem to have been slightly pear-shaped from the start with this thread.

We have now been informed that the design is in fact a T-SHIRT design and NOT a POSTER design as was first thought. So shouldn't we be voting on whether or not it is a sick T-SHIRT design?

As a poster...as it is now it won't work, but adjustments could be made and it would serve it's purpose just as well as any other.

Personally i think that it is a pretty sick t-shirt design...hopefully i will get my hands on one.

Please guys try and keep comments above-the-belt!
  • Spy Dude
    June 2008
ahhh but if it hadnt been for this topic the truth would not have been revealed and we would be still thinking pink wings was a poster and not in fact a t-shirt.

    Hey guys...

Just my thoughts on this, very quickly i wil go into depth later on as i just got back from Bali ;D And im super jetlagged and all that crap anyway...whilst i was waiting 10 hours in Kualu Lumpur airport for my connecting flight to CPT, i found this...(Refer to attachment)

Now to me the idea of the wedge poster, this year and last years seems a bit plagerised to me?

Anyway, onto this years...as an official event poster, i cant agree with it....the washed out pinky colour looks crap, the bodyboarder with WINGS??? Symbolism = ? Bodyboarding is soaring to new heights? I think a lot more could have been done to make it look really good as it is one of/the best contest every year...

Surely an advertising agency or sixty40 or even some sort of competition could have been held to produce some sort of proffessional logo/identity for the contest this year?

Flame me, dont flame me, comments appreciated :D

See what you guys did, I am finally a little bit annoyed.

Man, you guys are a bunch of nuggets... and some seriously short attention spans to boot.
It’s not a poster! as was mentioned about 5 times.

Spy - sick poster for the Jbay comp but you need to compare apples to apples (doh). You of all should know that you can’t compare that to the wedge T-SHIRT. You want to compare the promotional material of a R30 000 contest with no ad-spend to an international six figure event with an advertising budget of (probably) six figures? I am scratching my head in wonder.

This T-shirt was designed using elements from the Wedge poster 3 years ago, almost exactly the same (was orange then and is pink now).

Plagiarism!! I am guessing everyone should stop using plus signs now (Seriously, do I really need to comment on this)? If you try hard enough you will find comparisons in everything. There is a big difference between plagiarism and the use of universal elements. Sorry guy (Gman) you missed the boat, look, there it goes, wave goodbye... never to be seen again.

I see a lot of talk and no action as per usual on this forum (as Dcmike mentioned).

Simply put: If you have the time and consider yourself well versed in communication arts offer your services to the next event... bodyboarding needs it. What bodyboarding doesn’t need is more people talking and not doing...

    Later alligators

Ps. I mentioned this in a previous post; In my opinion, the design doesn’t work as a poster but is more than passable as a shirt.

OH, and please don't go wasting your time creating something now, if you haven't noticed, Wedge Classic is next week. Get in on it early next year, Wedge Classic isn't the only event, the other events need help too...

I wasn't going to say anything but since it is open season on Sampi ... I don't know what has happened to the guy but Issue 05 has just come off the press and the man has been colouring outside the lines again --- even more so than ever and if he has lost the skills then I'm going to have to get my crayons out and give issue 06 a go ...

    mmm - scary!

Seriously though - as, has been mentioned, this has to be some of the best pre-event hype any contest has got this year so if you're following this thread then you know the event is happening and are hopefully lucky enough to be going or trying to mission to go. If you haven't entered yet, then get on the case as entries close on Tuesday 30th July at 18:30. Go to http://www.sixty40.co.za/wedgeclassic2008 where you will find details. This event is one of the best on the circuit and as with all the events, it is a great opportunity to catch up with the spongers from around the country and the organisors always put on a few good events outside of the comp. If you're thinking about entering ... then stop thinking and go enter.

Unfortunately not all of us from the sixty40 crew will be there but Sampi, DC & Gareth will be I believe ... Issue 05 will just have hit the shelves ... and you can stop by and say howzit and give the guys any feedback you have in person.

As for contributions --- as Sampi reckons, bodyboarding needs more skilled people and I'll try set-up a way for you to register your willingness if you're keen and I'll make this available to the organisations.

NOTE: I don't want to lock down topics like some moderators would do as I feel it discourages open discussion, so please just have a browse through some of the previous posts before posting so you are familiar with what has been discussed.

Well Sampi, i just happened to come across that logo for swiss airlines and thought i would post my opinion on the matter. Yes i know a plus sign is an element of almost every type font making it universal, its just the way it was used in this year, and last years wedge poster/banner/tshirt/marketing it, and all the other elements (Red & White, 2 Blocks, Plus sign etc etc) and principles seemed very familiar to that of the swiss airlines, then again who knows - swiss airlines maybe stole the design from the wedge poster :P

Agreed. Although i may sound like a hypocrite, nothing is spoken about these kinds of things, im sure there are a lot of people on the site alone that have different talents/connections and what not that can really help in terms of contest management/marketing/etc but without telling us we wont know so i like Kellys idea of being able to sign up your means and ways of helping out, could work really well!

humble apologies if I peed on anyone's battery - really, that wasn't the intention. It was intended as a playful comparison because as a good swiss boy I know that the swiss flag came long before the RedCross/ambulance hospital logo and RedCross was intentionally copied from the flag because the Swiss are neutral and could run onto the battle field and fetch the wounded without being a target.... As Sampi says, essentially nothing is original except what we see every day and take for granted, Life, nature, creation/evolution. And yes, the compo is around the corner so no Wedge designs but there's been enough talk about better clothing, posters, designs in general so it was just a nudge to get okes thinking and sharing.
With all the talk I can't imagine the attention when it gets worn around town!
    peace homies ;-)

There's this surf artist that used to live in West Aus (apparently in NZ now) called Rosco who did the most awesome surf art I've ever seen. Just simple pencil or black ink illustrations, but were so sick. I even tried to track him down a while back to try get some images but he's even deeper underground than Spy Dude...

As a side note, I'm really worried how this topic has uncovered how many of our voters are ravers...

    Dude...
Yeah sick poster, it wasnt a knock at you in any ways. Please read all my posts in this regard.
I had actually moved on, i was and have been blown away by B***********G's [clothing brands name removed to prevent possible SEO hits going their way] range of surf posters, original came to mind. I wasnt saying this is what should be done for the wedge or anything else, it was more like this is a sick poster, loving the water textures, angle, perspective and it makes you stare at it for ages. You appreciate and thus with the big branding all over it, brand recognition gets imprinted into your mind. Simple advertising laws bru.

When this topic started it was known that this was infact a T-shirt, and as i too have stated -- this works as a t-shirt, not a poster. You were the one that shed light onto that topic.
Anyways happy days and good luck to all that are putting on the wedge show this year.
Hope God smiles on you with waves, wind pretty girls on the beach.

    Mr Moo... i am underground.
